Repainting new parts

I got brand new lower weldments (part that attaches lower 3pt lift arm to finish mower deck) that came in the putrid Land Pride tannish green. They are high gloss dog vomit color. It's the color Land Pride uses for the most part when they don't use Kubota Orange. On my finish mower these new part should be black. I ordered them from Messicks and just assumed they would come in black. I picked up some tractor implement rattle can paint from TSC but I need to know how to best re-paint these parts so it doesn't look like crap. They are high gloss Land Pride Tan (yuk). Should I sand them first then rattle can them black? Just paint over the brand new parts with several coats of black? I don't want to have to do it again. Thanks.

I would use fine sand paper first to give something for the paint to adhere to.

Most people don't think of it, but there is an easier way to prepare for painting without sanding.
Been using something like this for years on all kinds of projects, woodworking included.

I've not tried the chemical prep, other than wiping down a part after sanding with a pre-paint product to remove all dust. I would hit it with a solvent wipe to remove all oils, dirt and waxes, then do a sanding with a high grit paper to smooth and key the surface, wipe down with a pre-paint and then shoot 3-4 coats of black on top. I would want to ensure that color I am putting on is going to stay on.

I ordered two parts from Messicks (FEL stands) and one was raw metal and one was orange.. They shipped a can of paint but hard to get the match right. Sort of annoying two of the same things were different.

I would try a high grit wet sanding, like 220 then wash thoroughly and put a few coats of high gloss black with spray cans.. should be fine.

Wet paint or even powder coat needs a surface that it can stick to. Paint companies refer to the surface as substrate and they all say remove oil,grease, and gloss to give it good adhesion. If you use sandpaper, remember that the coarser the grit the duller the shine will be if using gloss. Coarsest grit I would use would be 120. Never tried the chemical stuff but maybe I will next time I have to paint something.
