Rear PTO will not completely disengage. Advice??

Hey Guys,
I did finally get the electrical item corrected, but now I have another one.

I did a little mowing last week and now the PTO will not completely disengage. First thing I checked was the cable and it is a little weak and needs to be replaced, so I went to the transmission end and tried to move it from there to get it to disengage. I finally got the rear shaft to disengage so it quit turning, but internally, I can still hear it sounding like it is trying to engage when I release the clutch. Clattering sound almost like an old engine trying to run when way out of timing or really low on oil. Wondering if I just leave her shut down until I can get a chance to replace the rear PTO cable.

Any advice?

I tried to get back on the tractor to do some cleanup from the hurricane. When I let off the clutch it sounds like the PTO drive is trying to engage but isn't fully. The rear shaft was not turning. Concerned about the sound I just engaged it and ran the bushing for a little while and then tried to disengage again, and it will disengage the rear pro shaft, but I still hear the PTO trying to engage inside the transmission. I just shut it down for fear of causing any damage. Any recommendations on where to start?

Maybe obvious but don’t mow with it until you get the noise sorted. It’s upstream from the engine and likely an issue in the transmission area, I had a similar noise which was a bearing on its last legs so don’t ignore it

That model tractor can have 2 different setups in it, and knowing which one would help to diagnose the issue better.

Is it equipped with Independent PTO, or is it Non independent?
Does it have the mid PTO?
