There are a couple of 50" rear mount snow blowers for sale locally. In low range, reverse is 2mph according to tractordata. Seems about right; it's nearly as fast as third. I think I'll be quite underpowered. If I was going front mount, I think I could go slow enough to make it work. I don't have live PTO either, so if I'm not thinking ahead, I'll be trying to lift the 3 point while the tractor is already bogging. If it was front mount, I could shift down low enough to make it work. I think I'll pass, but wondering if anyone has done anything similar and made it work. Making it work in my case also involves busting the berm left by the plow.

I think you got the right idea, when you said front mount.
There are several models that will allow you to do just that and power it off the rear PTO.
Or better yet, power it directly off the crank with an electric clutch, that way it's now "live" all the time! ;)

So what's a good recipe for a front mount blower for an L1500? I'm thinking a blower from a garden tractor. That way I don't need to tap into the hydraulics for the lift. I was looking at pics from a 5100 and it looks like the electric clutch came from an AC compressor. I would think that's a little light, but maybe not. Needs to be 48" to open the track.

The other thing I was looking at earlier is an old Erskine. It was a single stage with just the impeller and not auger. The snow is drawn in by the sides of the housing. Unlike most of them, this one was designed so that you drive forward through the snow pulling the blower behind. Since my L1500 is running skinny Ag tires, driving over the snow first probably isn't that big of a deal.

Bucktail, you want a Kubota snowblower? I've got a TG 2746, front mount two stage. Made for TG1860 tractors. Also a 54" dozer blade for same tractor. Both like new.

Front mount it is.

The Snow blower D2Cat has would fit the bill perfectly.
Yes surprisingly the AC compressor clutch packs are exactly what you want, they will hold up.
To lift it your going to need to tap into the Hydraulics (easy enough) or connect via linkage or cable to the three point (seen it done with a cable and it worked very well) or use a linear actuator AKA electric ram, which I wouldn't recommend for this operation.
