Rear axle seal leaking

I have B2910 with about 1000 hours on it, that the rear axle seals keep blowing out and leaking all the hydro fluid out. If I keep the tractor in a heated shop before using it out in the cold, the seals stay in. Seems like the axles get cold, then stick to the seal and spin them out. Has anyone found a way to stop this from happening.

I would verify that the vent is not clogged causing pressure build up, and then I'd look at retaining the seal better with some retaining adhesive or mechanical means like staking.

The vent is diffiently not clogged, the seals will start pushing out when the hydro fluid is cold, even with the fill cap off. I called local dealer and they never heard of this happening, thought maybe I was using aftermarket fluid (which I am) and that maybe it was the problem. I think I'll try a filter and fluid change (Kubota fluid) and possible try to spray axle with dry graphite and see if the seal quits sticking to the axle, if that is what is happening. The seal has edges on it so that I don't think I can stake it in, the housing has four bolt holes around the seal so if all else fails I can make a retainer and bolt it on.

The vent being clogged was in the back of my mind, so this summer when it wasn't acting up I cleaned it, and it wasn't plugged. I have seen alot of a trucks rear differentials blow seals because of clogged vents. I agree with you MagKarl that should be the first thing to check. Checked.

That's my bet on the cause of the problem, Use UDT or better yet SUDT.

Are you putting in a new seal when it blows out or just driving the old one back in?

As far as coating the axle with anything it will be gone in a split second, and won't help you in the least.

I m just re-driving the seals back in. They will stay in as long as fluid doesn't get cold. I will get SUDT and try that.
OH... Get a set of new seals too! They are not good to reinstall once they pop out, and will keep popping out!

Do they push out when the tractor is running but not moving, or only when you drive it?

How are the bearings? Any chance they are shot and letting the shaft walk around and work the seal loose?

Well I finally got the service manual in and all the parts and fluid gathered up. I checked for wheel bearing play and found none. I pulled the axle housings and changed the axle seals. Not to hard of a job, the housings just unbolt from the side, remove sub frame, unhook brake rods and diff lock rod, and comes right off. The axles are held on with snap ring inside and the inner bearing pulls off with a light effort from bearing puller, rest just slides right apart. I changed both filters and refilled with super UDT. Already had a really cold day and left outside overnight and tested first thing in the morning with success. The seals never leaked and I also had one of my rams to the bucket had started leaking and it quit too after working the tractor for a bit. That is the last time I ever use cheap hydro fluid.:)
