The two bearings of on driving shaft of my gearbox are going out (bearings 14 and shaft 10 in the diagram). I see the spring the one spring clip but I am unsure how to get the shaft out once I so I can extract the bearings.

Any advice on how to disassemble and reassemble is greatly appreciated.

Not sure but it looks like Part 2 and 3 are directly in line with the shaft and bearings. If the bearing inboard is a press fit in the casting, I'd use a flat nosed drift and push them out through the access plug.

If I was doing it, I'd remove the gearbox entirely and use my shop press to push them out but no press, a drift would work.

Don't have one (mower or gearbox but looking at it, I'd say that would be the removal procedure. Makes sure there are no internal snap rings holding the bearings in the bore. so the exit path is unobstructed.

I'm sure Wolfman will come along and correct me if I'm wrong...

I think SideFlip is correct... you're likely going to find that the aft bearing (14) must be removed from inside the housing, …. so removing the entire gearbox and opening it up from the bottom is what must happen.

You might wish to price the bearings and shaft, etc., before you go too far. It may be less expensive and less trouble to replace the gearbox entirely.

Thanks Guys. Called two Kubota dealers, one told me $1000 and the other $1600 for a new gearbox. They both said about $600 to rebuild. I refuse to pay that much. New Kubota bearings around $10 a piece and the seal is $20.

I pushed out the vertical shaft and those bearings are fine. No play whatsoever. I know I will have to ruin the seal getting it out, but I was hoping to push that out completely without having to ruin the other seal. I see only one snap ring on the horizontal shaft. I don't have a press. I was going to use a brass punch from the fill or drain hole. I wasn't sure if the gear would come out as well.

Thanks for all your help and advice!

Remove the oil seal, remove the internal cir-clip, then pull the shaft out, both bearings should come out with it, but maybe just the first bearing, second one will just need to be fished out, note the shim or shim and the bevel gear will be behind the second bearing.

Kubota does not press bearings on or in anything, they are just tolerance fit held in place with clips, so if something doesn't move it most likely just needs a little help, but nothing forceful! ;)

Thanks! One more question for a noob at these things. What's the best way to remove the oil seal with the shaft in? I can't use my puller.

I guess there is no way to remove it without destroying it, right?
