Trying to help out elderly father in law but he's to the point where all I get is I don't remember or I don't know. It's his and his brothers tractor and his brother just had a stroke a lil bit back so he's no help either.

The tractor is a kubota LB552 Mower is John Deere LX6 Not sure of continuous or independent PTO.....has a little lever to engage PTO so thinking independent. When I get into thick stuff the whole PTO shaft where it comes outta the tractor stops till I get out of thick stuff then starts building speed back up till hit more thick stuff.

I mowed 1 field and did fine. Came back 2 days later to do the other field and got half way thru when all this started happening. I've never dealt with this type of tractor mine was a lawn tractor not a farm tractor.
He told me to check the hydraulic fluid. Said if I can't feel it on my finger tip then need to add. So he gave me a gallon and added it and another gallon too and still can't feel any on my finger tip. But 2 gallons didn't change the way it was acting. Could that be the problem with the PTO? How much does it hold? And isn't there supposed to be a dipstick on the screw cap to tell when full?

I think LB552 is the "Loader" not the tractor model. Is there a model number on the hood of the tractor ?

Do you have a slip disk clutch at the tractor end of the pto shaft to the mower? If so it sounds like that needs adjustment.

If the pto protection is a shear pin, and the actual shaft that enters the tractor stops then I think that a clutch inside the tractor is slipping or it is a hydraulic problem in the pto drive.

Post at least 5 times then post a picture of the shaft that stops in heavy grass, but with the tractor not running and the key in your pocket

In order for us to give you better answers you'll need to give the tractor model number.

I would guess it's an L4300DT (4wd) or L4300F (2wd)

If that is the case, the Sight gauge for the fluid level is on the back of the tractor, do not overfill it, if you think you have drain some out.

It will also have a Hydraulic clutch, if the tractor is still moving fine yet the PTO quits working, it could be either the PTO valve, adjustment on the PTO valve or cable, or could be a damaged PTO clutch pack.

Or as Russell stats it could be a slipping PTO slip disk clutch pack.
