Pto won’t stay engaged

I was bush hogging the other day and had to switch off the Pto to dismount the tractor (MX5400 HST). When I went to engage the Pto , it would not stay engaged. I tried several times but no luck. If I held the switch to on, it would run but as soon as I let go it would switch off. Any ideas?

Just a guess but I'd check the PTO switch itself. Sounds like it is making contact as long as you're holding it. How difficult would it be to access the switch - or a plug in the harness?

Just a though...
Check in and around the switch / lever for dirt, debris - leaf, grass clipping etc. May be just enough dirt to act like a spring and only make contact when compressed. Hopefully it's something simple.

Are you pushing down and twisting to the right to lock?
