My L275 is finally up and running well, but my PTO won't disengage when the clutch pedal is depressed. I have the dual clutch option in this machine and when holding the pedal down it shifts gears with no problem but the PTO spins if engaged, regardless of how far I press the clutch pedal.
This was a project tractor that I bought with a bad engine and we swapped it out with another engine from a donor tractor. We used the original clutch from the blown engine. Is this problem likely fixable with a simple clutch adjustment or should I look deeper? Is there an online reference describing proper clutch adjustment?

BTW, after the previous owner blew the engine, this tractor sat for a total of about 4 years before getting the engine transplant. Is it likely that the PTO clutch and pressure plate are stuck together? He left the tractor in the field for a year.

There has been another recent thread in this forum involving the same problem.

Consensus was that clutch was stuck 'together' and would not release.

Try hooking PTO to something like wood chipper and see if feeding chipper 'shocks' the clutch enough to shake it loose. I think you'd need to leave the PTO control lever in the 'disengaged' position for this to work.

Please post back and advise actions and results so we may all learn.

Thanks for the advice, Stubby, but my PTO does disengage when I flip the PTO lever to the OFF position, it just won't disengage when I depress the clutch pedal. The PTO works fine if I engage the lever before starting the tractor (which obviously is neither a safe nor practical solution) and I'm able to disengage the lever while the tractor is running, but the clutch does not affect it.
I bush-hogged about 2/3 of an acre with it on Saturday and it did not help the situation any.

For Stubbie's trick to work you wood need to have the pto lever engaged and the clutch pedal all the way down. If it has been stuck(rusted to flywheel) that long I am afraid you will need to split the tractor and free the clutch disk.

SOLVED - Re: PTO won't disengage

It's been a while since the last post, but yesterday I finally got serious about determining the cause of this problem and had a hunch... Wondering if maybe the clutch pedal itself was out of adjustment, I located the technical information for adjusting the pedal and found that it had way too much free travel. As a result, it would travel far enough to disengage the transmission clutch but not the PTO clutch. After fixing that little problem and also setting the proper clearance for the clutch safety switch as well, she now works exactly as she should. It's a great feeling to have the PTO working properly.
