I bought an older 6 foot Pak-Flail flail mower to go with my new L4701 that I bring home on Thursday. The PTO shaft was not included with the mower. I am new to this tractor thing and am not sure if these pto shafts are fairly universal or is the specific connections for Kubota's and brands of attachments? If I decide to add a quick hitch do I need a longer pto shaft to account for the extra space between the tractor and the mower? Sorry for the rookie question.

Is there a North 40 or a Tractor supply near you?
They both will have the shaft you need.
What size shaft is on the flail?
Is it splined like the tractor side?
If round, you'll need the size of that shaft.

There are some rules for PTO shafts, such as what rotate is the alignment of the yokes at each end and also the minimum overlap of the outer and inner shafts. Perhaps someone can post a diagram of these "rules".

I went out and measured. It is a 6 spline shaft that is about 1 1/8" at the main part of the shaft and 1 3/8 at the outside of the splines.
Typical 1 3/8 6 spline. Is this same on back of your tractor? My guess is yes. If so your good to go by visiting local farm store as suggested..... but wait for sticker shock. Your looking at two to three bills.

Hook up the implement sans shaft and take measurements as described in video below. Your PTO shaft will slide but there is a max amount one should allow it to slide open to maintain integrity. Where you buy it should have knowledge to answer that question about the shaft...... though they might have to look it up. Take spline measurements on tractor and if different than implement take that info with you as well.

BUT..... If your getting something else that has a shaft coming with it.... I would wait and measure to see if you can share shafts between the implements unless you'll be swapping between implements real often. Will save you several hundred bucks.

You can always search craigslist for shafts as well.

Yet..... Im no pro AT ALL... so here is some videos
