OK,, do any of you guys remember years ago, those damned demonic toys called furbies ? Just start talking or making strange noised for no reason, well this aint about them but it is about a talking machine,, yes Alexa !
Now I was given an Alexa echo thing by one of the grand daughters, OK , it plays music, and sometimes the news when I ask it the right way, so that's cool.
NOW, here is the parallel between the furbie and alexa. For no reason the Alexa will turn on, at random times, no one asking it to play in the middle of the night. For example late one night, I am awoken by voices, soft quiet voices. I can't understand, what they are saying but male voices, low and threating . And yes I slowly got out of bed with a, .45 cal frying pan ( remember I lost all my guns in a boating accident ) and flash light. And trying to remember all my training ease around the corner in the kitchen. And what do I find ? Alexa, playing a old time radio show of Dragnet! I unplugged it, and still did a sweep of the house every thing as it should be. ANd it will make strange sounds like, ding dong, or a chirp, or a buzzing sound, and one day for only a couple seconds, it sounded like an old numbers station, you hams know of what I speak.
SO the question remains,,,,, WHY THE FREEKIN thing turns on all by it self. I am the only one here so it is not someone else playing games. Some one any one, please ,,, before I unplug the damn thing and put in the garage .

you're being too kind to it... I'd use that .45 cal frying pan on it.

Other than my I phone which disgusts me as well, there is not one chance in hell that anything like that (alexa, siri) would be in my house.

Get rid of it Skeets.

A friend of mine got an Alexa for Christmas and was having fun asking it all kinds of questions. He then thought of a question that she couldn't know the answer to, so he asked "Siri, why do I have such bad luck with women". The machine started spitting out a whole lot of answers like, you're boring, you are a slob, you don't know how to treat women, and so on and so forth. After about a 5 minutes session of berating him, it finally said. "And the final reason is that my name is Alexa, not Siri".

Several years ago my daughter and son on law got a robot vacuum.

Well when we were house sitting, I connected my phone too it.

After they came home from vacation, I started messing with them.

I would get up in the middle of the night for a pee, and send their vaccum around their home 😬😬😬😬

Took them a couple days to realize what was going on. Daughter was livid.

Son in law thought it was a pretty good prank 🤣😂🤣😂😂

They don't give me access to their wifi or electronics for some reason 🤔🤔🤔

N.Y,
Our Alexa's have also started playing music and talking randomly for no reason lately. I think they are implementing more AI trying to see our reactions and how we handle it. I threatened mine death by lead if it doesn't stop. It hasn't stopped so it is probably just testing me. I don't know what shooting Alexa could get you in NY 🤔 so may just drown one in the dishwasher as an example.

My mom had one of those. Her's would act the same way that Skeets described. One night it asked her if she was still alive. That was the last straw for her. She got rid of it the next morning. When she passed last January we found that Alexa in a box of junk in the garage.

Makes me think of a challenge my mother unintentionally issued to my brother and I when we were teenagers. We had been advised by our parents many times “you can’t crush a tick”. They were quite common so we routinely cut them in half with a pocket knife or flushed them down a toilet.

One afternoon when we apparently didn’t have enough to do, one of us found a tick on themselves. Took it to Mom and asked her why she’d always told us you can’t crush a tick. She told us to flush or filet the tick and quit being stupid.

There was an old farrier’s anvil, around 120lb, in the shop and we had a 20lb hammer we used for splitting firewood that resisted the 9lb maul. Ceiling in the shop was a bit low for tick crushing and we had enough sense to not risk damaging the concrete shop floor, so we took the anvil outside to the gravel. Scotch taped the tick to the anvil and I hit it as hard as I could with the 20lb sledge. Turns out you can crush a tick. Mom again told us to quit being stupid and gave us some make work job so we’d leave her alone.

I still have that anvil and hammer. Still use both occasionally. If I had a device that acted like that Alexa, I’d be testing it to see if Alexa’s are harder to crush than ticks.

Maybe an axe could accidentally cut it in two.

Or, just tell you granddaughter thanks, I appreciate the gift, but it's not a gift you can use, or some other excuse you can come up with, and insist on her taking it back.

My daughter wanted to get me one for Christmas a couple of years ago, and I politely, but firmly refused.

When my wife comes home at the end of the week I will start calling her "Alexa". She is already starting to give me grief so I know that she is feeling better. I am beginning to feel ill. I might have to run away from home!
