There's a proposal for 25 windmills next town over.

They're big...650' total height. Seems like it's a 100 megawatt project.

We had anti's come out of the woodwork 15 years ago about the possibility of natural gas fracking. Fracking never happened in NYS.

This windmill project is still a year or two out, but will be curious to see how it's received by some of those same folks.

I'm not taking any sides for it, but doubt I would do a lease for one...

funny timing...

I just saw an interview with Trump last week or the week before. Trump stated that the windmills were causing cancer :D:confused:

i'm not being political at all, I just thought it was pretty funny ...

We have a couple hundred of them on the top of 'The Hill", they do make noise and vibration if your close enough to them to feel it. with more on the way.
I had a Camp up where they were built in I could hear them at night when the wind was blowing the right way. I was 4 miles to the closest one.
Big and ugly, leak oil, kill birds and bats. I'm not a big fan of the big fans as we say up this way.

They put in a big farm where we used to live. We had lots of raptors so I can imagine the effect on those birds. Plus they put security gates up with guards so no free access to where I hunted and rode my horses. Lots of them down in the desert of southern Wyoming, along I-80, away from civilization so the only casualties would be the wildlife and environment.

Trump stated that the windmills were causing cancer :D:confused:
One of the leading causes of cancer is stress. Look across the number of people you know and the impacts on families from stress...

Example: Friend of mine quits his job to take care of his wife when she gets breast cancer. He helps her through cancer but loses their savings as he tries to make a living day trading. Their marriage ends in divorce, but they stay friends. Four years later, he comes down with cancer. She goes through the whole cancer program with him. He slowly withers and passes on. Nine months later, she is diagnosed with breast cancer again and dies three months later. Just thinking about what that family went through raises my stress level immensely.

Imagine not being able to sleep or enjoy time outside of your home? Imagine writing the mortgage check every month thinking how much you hate the place but knowing you could never sell it with those whirling monsters outside. Does that sound more than your daily average stress?

Hell yeah...

Avoid stress. It'll kill you, and quick.

I know some areas being crop farmed that were leased. The owners signed off with permission for some windmills. When they were built the field were ruined for crops. They dug large areas for foundations then dug up the fields to bury the cables. The farmer told me he could not take his equipment where the work was done because of too many rocks dug up.

FAKE NEWS!! Trump never stated windmills cause cancer.

Windmills are a scam that taxpayers pay for.

Happened up here in Maine on a pristine lake town and it split the community in two. The governor now senator made money off it using his position of power. Oh and yes you can hear them from a mile away. Low pulsing hum. Up close it sounds like a pulsing far away jet engine sound.

I do know there's a couple windmill farms an hour away where the property tax breaks/incentives have expired, or nearing expiration.

There is concern the owners of the Mills may simply walk away from them unless their tax abatements are continued.

Not hijacking this thread but a similar situation. I'm in central Georgia and the only wind driven things we have are the old windmills for wells.

However, we have lots of sunshine. So now, there are large scale solar farms being built, each is about 100 acres. When you drive by one of these, you feel a sudden spike in temperature. A substantial spike. They are hot probably because the panel faces are black.

Although solar is probably a great idea, long term heating in the areas where these farms are located is going to rise and cause problems (in my opinion).

Read this short article about the effects of wind and solar farms, especially on precipitation. With the solar farms, it looks like an anticipated 2 degree temp increase. I think that's conservative. Drive by one and you'll feel the heat.

We have a large installation a couple hrs north of me along US30 in NW Ohio. Other than just being unsightly, you can hear the blades in the wind. Not worth the money they would offer to have one on my property. I like to look at stars at night, not blinking beacons on top of towers.

I am interested in what I can do to be self sufficient and off the grid. There are numerous companies that make home system such as Archimedes (https://thearchimedes.com/) or vertical wind power generators. If I went solar, I would have to look at Smart Flower (https://news.energysage.com/smartflower-solar-complete-review/) but man, that 25-30K cost just to get going sure buys a lot of propane. For less than a third, I can get a nice whole house generator installed for when the power does go out

I may do a few traditional panels when I get my barn built to power lights, door opener, tool charges and security system. Heck, if I keep my air compressor up at the house and just run the air line to the barn, I would really limit my need for AC there.

After consideration for over a decade, we finally made the leap into solar. The cost has declined so far, it now makes sense, even for old farts like us. Most of all, we had to convince "Sarge, the Cost Analyst" that it made financial sense. A visit to the company reminded her of the close knit world she experienced with the military. After a tour of their facility and a look at the numbers, she was sold. Mind you, we live in the best locale for solar in the country: Arizona.

The months vary in what you'll generate thanks to the sun wandering around affecting both solar position and length of day. May is the biggest solar month with October a close second. This month (May) I am generating over 100kwh a day. In January, it was 40kwh on a sunny day. The panels are on my roof (easy access) and offer shade through the hot months to about 1200 sq ft of roof.

Panels have decreased in cost about 60% in the last five years while increasing in productivity and lifespan. My panels are guaranteed for 25 years and have a life expectancy of 40+ years. They are guaranteed to never drop more than 8% from installed efficiency.

A buddy installed a huge array 14 years ago. His panels are starting to decay in productivity. With the decline in cost, he'll swap a few out every year. The biggest reduction in cost was with the inverters. His German inverter was $10,000 (!!!) when installed and came with a six year warranty. He is expecting a failure anytime and is happy that his replacement should be around $2000 installed.

One thing to consider: When the grid goes down, so do most solar systems for fear of back-feeding the grid. My system, from the leading edge of the solar world, Australia, is designed to use a battery back-up system. (Batteries are coming way down in price.) When I get batteries for my system in a couple years, when the grid goes down, my system will self-isolate and continue running on batteries. That is a great option if you have the sunlight to keep things topped off and you aren't running the air conditioning or heat all day. At least it won't run out of fuel like back-up generators, which I also have.

:)

Sorry. Yes, he did. I saw and heard it for myself.

Anyway, carry on.
You heard what you wanted to hear apparently because I heard him say "THEY SAY THE NOISE CAUSES CANCER" and the "they" he was referencing where those that link windmill noise pollution to stress/anxiety and stress/anxiety to cancer. It almost looks like he was mocking/joking.

In the video below you can see exactly what he says. Note the title of video is fake news.

You can say the same thing about Walmart parking lots. Acres of asphalt contributing to localized urban warming. Working at wallymart and living near one probably raises stress levels too...a leading cause of cancer. Where are all the signs shouting BAN WALMART?

Around here we get people complaining about solar farms the same way some people complain about wind mills. NIMBY

Mine is not a complaint but rather an observation. I live 6 miles east of I-75. When we normally have rain starting in June for most of the summer, since I-75 has been overcoated with asphalt a few years back, we will have rain in the forecast but when the rain clouds (coming from the west) reach I-75, they dissipate. This is now like living east of the of the mountain ranges in the western US. I-75 is now like a wall that stops rain from moving further east.

Mikester, why did you specify Wal-Mart parking lots? If your concern is parking lots, does it matter what business has their customers park on it?

If the idea of parking lots and heat is the issue then all asphalt surfaces fit the bill, including highways!

When we bought our place there were small residential wind generators and solar panels for our alternative power system along with the grid. Even the small generators made noise and with the winds we have they were destroyed over a period of time, could not stand up to it. I don't know how many birds they killed but they almost killed me a few times, climbing up a ladder over 20 feet to do maintenance was not for the faint of heart. Now I just have solar, a dozen panels on the hill behind the house so unobtrusive. We do generate some power but rely mainly on the grid. It is nice not worrying about the grid going down because our system automatically takes over if there is an interruption. Ray is right, inverters are coming down in price and getting smarter.
