Aquired old L295 with front bucket. Runs good when started, only use 1-2 times per mth. Tried to start last wknd. Turned over 5 sec. Then I turned switch to left for glow plugs 3 secs.. then all went dead. Any ideas.

I would first establish that the battery is in good shape. Then make sure terminals are clean making good contact. From there, I would have to reassess what was actually going on and start checking other electrical connections and fuses.

OK, The voltage gauge was still showing 12 volts but still wouldn't do anything. Going back to the woods this wkend to try again. Were is this clutch safety switch and how do I check it?

Down under the left floor board. You'll see two wires with quick disconnects leading into the switch. Pull them out and then connect the two leads from the wiring harness somehow (coupler is safest) without grounding them and then try cranking (MAKE SURE ITS IN NEUTRAL!). If it works then you've got a bad switch. You can bypass it but it's not recommended you can now start it without being in the seat and can run yourself over if it's in gear. Be smart about it either way.

Everything went dead all at once? Describe what happens in more detail.

If there is a problem in the starting circuit (probably the starter solenoid or clutch switch) then you'll have full lights and full voltage showing but you just get nothing when you try and crank the tractor. In that case check the clutch switch and then the leads to the starter solenoid.

If the battery is flat when you try and crank the tractor the dash lights will dim or go out and you may hear it rotate up to the compression stroke and then stop. Another possibility that will show these symptoms is a bad connection through the battery leads. Check both ends of both cables. If that doesn't help jump it and then verify that you're getting 14+ volts at the battery terminals. If you are run the tractor (or let it sit at a high idle) for a half hour or so and then see if it'll restart on it's own. If it won't replace the battery.

Ok jump started the tractor and ran fine. New battery 2 b installed on next trip. What cca is required, if seen everything from 525-800? Some of the wire connections I find questionable, so a rewire job may soon come to be. Past owner (deceased elder brother) was a diesel/crane mechanic who liked to redo everything his way Very limited wires.

Plan on changing the trans/hraulic fluid. Just got a shop manuel that shows for an L295 there is a filter on the right side of the engine, but there may also be a filter under under the seat just in front of the axle on the passenger side. This is shown for a different model. Possible? this location is behind the muffler which will need to be removed. Say it aint so.
