Hello all - First post.

I'm being transferred from GA to Ft. Carson, CO around 01DEC. We are, hopefully, closing on a property near Colorado Springs with about 3 acres. I've never owned a riding mower, a snowblower, a tractor - or even rented anything like that. Yes, complete neophyte....

It did occur to me that I might need something to mow with and clear a 200' long driveway. Hence my current research over the last week.... My brother in law restores John Deere - and is a fanatic. They have a military discount, too. So, that's where I started.

After considerable research and study, I've ended up at Kubota. This is all Internet research - I've never sat on or run anything.

After reading 10,000 posts on here (all amazing by the way), I realize that the need should be driven by the property. So I'm posting my property (if nothing falls through on the closing!!).

First is an overhead view (thanks Google Spybird1). Right under 3 acres. From the front (right side working left), a bit of a hill up to the house, 200 ft of gravel driveway. (Main road is dirt. About 1/2-3/4 mile to hardtop.) The house sits on the highest point. The back yard slopes down, past a small horse barn, to a small creek with a bit of a pond on the south side. Across the creek is 1/4'ish acre of flat grass. Obviously a few trees - but no virgin, "wooded" area.

Picture 2 is from the dirt road looking up to the house.

Picture 3 is the back of the house. Sorely in need of some landscaping \ leveling \ soil work.

Picture 4 is from the back deck toward the creek \ pond. You can see a bit of the horse barn on the right.

Picture 5 is from the very back edge of the property looking back toward the house (past the pond).

So that's the property...

As far as uses: Mowing and snow removal are the ongoing tasks. Being in the Army, "snowdays" aren't a thing. I'll be pushing snow at O'dark-thirty. I might even need to clear a path to the hardball - I have no idea if anybody clears this dirt road.

I plan on considerable flattening of the back and building a patio at basement level and putting in a door to the patio from the first floor. So, some earth moving (over time) can be expected. Grading the driveway, yes. Perhaps running electrical\water to the barn, or electric to a front gate with a "soiler."

I don't have much brush, clearing, rocks, as far as I know. Was leaning towards a BX23s and a backhoe, but not sure the need is high enough yet.

I believe a BX would be just fine - perhaps even more than fine. However, (and this is where it gets stupid), I'm really leaning towards the B2601 as it looks more "tractory." (My uncle has a farm about 60 miles south of Lex, KY. I can't help it, since being a kid, I've always wanted a tractor!!).

To add to my foolishness, I'm also leaning toward a mower that attaches to the 3 point hitch ("finish mower") vs the mmm due to the tractor'y'ness of it.

2601, finish mower, EA box scraper, EA rear blade, FEL - is where I'm leaning. Perhaps adding hydraulics later.... I have to be a bit careful on the price. My wife would absolutely kill me if she knew I was thinking of buying this..... (Not really "buying" outright, but "financing" and hiding the monthly payments!) :D

So, I apologize for the many words and pictures, but more info for the group is better than less.

Happy for any criticism or advice....

Thanks,

- JBD

Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here for you to digest so good luck.
Nice piece of property by the way.
I myself recently bought a Kubota B series (2320) instead of the BX. I went to a dealer and sat on both and thought the B series was more "tractory" and would be a better fit for me. I do have some trimming I do with a smaller tractor.
I also went with a front end loader, a box blade and a rear finish mower. I didn't want a mid mount always in the way and it proved to be. good decision.
With the rear finish there are no windrows, rarely any dirt or gras blowing in your face and the cut is perfect. I too maintain a long driveway and part of the access road as do all of the neighbors. There is nothing wrong with the BX though, but for my money I felt the B2320 was a better deal. I am sure you will be happy with either.
May I suggest you go to a dealer who has both tractors and put yourself in the seat? Just about every dealer can let you drive it around the lot if you so desire.
And go to the Kubota website and look at the incentives and financing options. When I bought mine it was 0% and that's impossible to beat.

Good luck to you. Keep us updated or just ask anything you want.

12Bravo, welcome. Thanks for your service. The answer to the questions you ask are only available to us because we live in a country with opportunity and a discretionary income unheard of in other parts of the world. Only because we are free!!

You said, "To add to my foolishness, I'm also leaning toward a mower that attaches to the 3 point hitch ("finish mower") vs the mmm due to the tractor'y'ness of it.

In my opinion a 3 pt. mower is a good choice. It gives you easy access to your other implements. If 80% of your tractor usage was mowing the yard, maybe a MMM would be easier to dodge obstacles like trees and landscaping.

The implements you list will be very practical. Down the road you may add a snowblower, depending on the snowfall there.

Now....the idea of hiding the monthly payments from your wife is a formula for disaster! Talk about the property with her. Paint a word picture of what you would like to do to improve it. Get her buy in, or down the road (and maybe years down the road) you WILL have to pay a "stupid tax". And it will be expensive.

Welcome! And to add the feminine perspective, I would suggest that you enlist your wife's collaboration in this, many of the guys will tell you how useful it is when they can run the tractor too. :)

I looked up the snowfall for Colorado Springs, and typically it is not that much. So even though you will be landing there inDecember, you should be ok getting to work if you both have 4WD vehicles. You probably will get out of your driveway to the road easy since it looks to be downhill. This will give you time to shop around for a good tractor dealer and ask advice from the neighbors as to who gives good service. The rare blizzards seem to happen in the spring. Course nothing is normal with the weather these days.

Welcome to the OTT forum 12Bravo. Glad you joined and you came to the right place to get any question answered.

Thanks for your service. How long have you been in?

Nice looking property with a lot of room.

I must agree with D2Cat and Sheepfarmer, definitely talk to your wife and get her on board first. Once you explain to her how much quicker you can get things accomplished and leave more time for her and her projects she will be on board. Also, the 0% financing will help by keeping the payments lower over a longer time.

Welcome to you, you will get good advice on your requirements here, my advice as a new member would be to go for more tractor than you think you need now, saves upgrading later if the need arises.
That is one delightful property, and a joy to see the images.:)

All, thanks for the welcome and the advice.

Firstly, the wife comment was generally tongue-in-cheek. My other hobby is woodworking – large, expensive, and generally “wants” vs “needs” purchases are common ground for us. Additionally, I’ve been married – well, 29 years this month. I’m pretty amazing! LOL! And I’d love it if she’d ever roll it around the yard!

I also found out that my BIL who is a JD “fanatic” owned a Kubota (B series) of some sort that he sold some time ago. Additionally, found out he was a member of this board……..

@sheepfarmer – I’m moving from GA to renovate for a year. She’ll be staying there. She has the 4Runner; I have the VW TDI. Switch you say? Other reasons that can’t happen. =) But your point is well taken.

@mickeyd – I’ve been active for 15 total (on and off, Reserves not included). And thank you also for your service….

Again, thanks for the welcome, encouragement, and marriage counseling! :D

You should look at the Landpride implements. Nothing against EA but Landpride is owned by Kubota. When I bought my BX there where some rebates available on the attachments ( Landpride only) and I was able to add them to the purchase price and finance them at 0.0%.

If you can, get something with a cab.
You'll appreciate it at 0'Dark Thirty when you're plowing or blowing snow.
And if you're lucky like the rest of us who got a cab for protection from the elements, it almost quit snowing since we got'em. :p
