I got my new BX25 with 60" MMM and a canopy. I have a little over 8 hours on it and mowed about 10 acres. Love it. Handles great. I'm still learning how to operate it. It took a little over a tank of fuel to mow the 10 acres, is that normal? Most of the grass was really heavy as the land had just been hayed and had probably never been mowed before. I've not had a chance to try the BH but there are a bunch of goundhog holes I'm going to be attacking just to learn how to use it. I hit one that just about launched me off the tractor but I had the seatbelt on. I try to keep the rpm's around 3,000 or better when mowing, is that to high? Is there a guide to tell you what rpm to use for various tasks? I will say that I'M REALLY GLAD THE DEALER TALKED ME INTO THE CANOPY!!!! The heat has been unbearable but the canopy makes a huge difference.

Thanks for any replies to the questions!

Every tractor that I have seen that has a tachometer, has a mark on it for the correct PTO speed. On my L175 it is pretty close to 2600 RPM's; going from memory.

On my AC-WD and the 9N Ford we had when I was a kid, (no tachs on either one) I was taught to wind it up to full throttle, then back it off a little so the governor had some throttle to work with.

3'ish litres an hour for heavy-cutting is good consumption . There was
someone on TBN who kept a fuel/use log and declared 3.6litres ( US gallon )
per hour, so you're on the money ..........
I'm happy at 3000rpm with the MMM . Even though the engine is governed
down ( and could probably hit 3600rpm ) I don't subscribe to this "flat-out" ilk.
It's not a screamin' two stroke and should be respected

I don't know how much fuel your tractor holds. My son and I cut about 35 - 40 acres of pasture a couple of weeks ago in about 10 hrs. My M 9000 (A/C going) with 8' Bushhog burned 15 gal and my L 3000 with 5' burned just a little over 4 gal. Some of this was thick grass and the rest was normal.

I wonder if maybe he burned up alot of fuel because he was cutting tall dense grass over a large area with a MMM. The mid mower is best suited for short grass in a smaller area such as lawns. Or an area where you cut it a little more often then once a month or every so many months. Perhaps a bush hog would use less fuel consumption.
