Ever since I got my tractor I have wanted a land plane. Even though I dont have much driveway but I do have a landscaping project coming up. So I figured I may as well put some of the steel that has been laying around my shop to good use. This is what I came up with. Tried it out today and it works great. 33CF014D-E876-49BF-96CA-EB3507B00F7A.jpg

It is stone free where I have to level. Its only made out of mild steel but then I only have 150 yards of driveway plus parking area. It will also be used to level black dirt when I landscape my yard. If the runners wear Ill weld on some flat bar. If the angle wears Ill replace it. But for what I am going to use it for it will most likely out last me.

In my area of "stone", that rig would last about 100 feet in either yard or drive.

I used to drag a foot and a half thick piece of concrete about 4 feet wide to knock down the ripples in the steep incline of our access road. That wore down and broke due to encounters with rock and ledge. Now I use a York rake ;-)

Lucky you!

Mine is all crusher run 1 inch and down size about 6inch thick base. This is going to be used to keep it looking good. Hell i used to use my diy cross country ski trail drag and it is made out of 2 x2 x 1/8 angle. I have been using it for years and it is still fine. I just needed something with a bit more weight.I was concered that it was going to be too heavey but it works good

And here I thought me using an old set of metal bed springs was a good idea

Thats just the point, if it works good for your purpose and does what you are trying to accomplish, it is a good idea. Not everyone has the need or money for an expensive heavy duty peice of equipment. I built this to do what I need it to do not what someone else needs it to do. IMHO if the bed spring works.....bonus.

Yep they served well and it is surprising how tuff those old bed springs are. And the neat thing is you have 8 different sides to use,,lol

My repurposed tire to box blade scraper will have to do here just to smooth out the gravel on top of the hardpack - my existing drive is on an alluvial gravel fan - but the rocks are watermelon to volkswagon size so none of them are going to budge no matter what I use.

I made mine with mild steel blades as a proof of concept. It worked but the blades wore like crazy and I soon replaced them with AR (abrasion resistant) steel. Those ones wear well.
