I just did the 50hr service on my MX4800. I took off both oil drain plugs, took off the oil filter and pulled the dipstick and the fill cap and let it sit for 2hrs to make sure it was completely drained of oil. When I filled it back up, it took only 8qts to fill it instead of the 9qts it holds. 8qts filled it to just a hair above the top line on the dipstick (this is with the engine cold). I know when its warm more oil will be in the filter and spread around the engine. Trying to figure out why its not holding that 9th qt. Should I only look at the dipstick when the engine is warm or does it matter? Any ideas?

I've been doing oil changes for more than 50 years on all kinds of engines. Seldom have I ever seen an engine that required pouring in the stated "capacity" of the engine to bring the dipstick up to the mark. Actually, getting 8 out of 9 quarts into it seems pretty good to me.

There is always oil in the engine internals, usually a quart or two. Unless it's leaking or burning oil, filling it back up to the mark on the dipstick is sufficient.

Good timing on question. I did my 50 hour service a couple of weeks ago, and noticed same thing. Manual calls for 8.7 qts, and I put in 8, started motor for a minute or two to circulate, checked dipstick and was just barely above full. Kept the 9th quart for later.

A quick related question. The manual says change trans filter at 50, but only on HST if I am reading correctly. Mine is geared, so I didn't change, but thinking 200 hours is pretty long to wait. Did you read manual same way? I may just go ahead and change for peace of mind.

Yes, Mine said the same thing. I didnt understand why it said to replace the filter but not the fluid so I asked a tech when I was at the dealer buying parts. He said the manual was correct and to only replace the filter on the 50hr service. Mine is a HST. FYI..... I had a hell of a time getting the transmission filter off. I broke my first wrench and finally got it off with a LISLE brand super gripper wrench. It was really on there tight. Not sure if the factory paint glued it on or what the deal was. By the way, I found absolutely nothing in the filter, it looked brand new.
