Anyone know anything about these older MTD mowers. I’d like to get this thing functioning. Specifically the transmission does not engage in reverse or high forward. I can find model number.

Just a thought! Some tractors had a pull handle at the rear of the machine that disengaged the trans so you could push it when not running!

Nice
That one has the tiller on it. The one I had was an MTD/Yard Machine. Tag should have been on the bottom of the seat/rear fenders area. It was hard to find a model number for mine as well. Mine was a bit older and I removed the lift and parts to use on my Kubota 5200. I looked at my old pics but I didn't capture a model #. Sorry
It had the same drive, engine, and sleeve hitch lift as yours

There 'should' be a tag on the transaxle unit, maybe under a case bolt or glued to the rear face of the case. Doesn't seem to be a "Peerless' unit, have the books on those...none were just high-low-neu-rev units.
Read the tag on the engine. the first 6 digits of the last group of numbers 'code' is the DOM , Date of Manufacture' If the engines original, it's a good bet the rider was made within 6 moths after the DOM.
If TD can post his numbers , Google should be able to find drawings.
I suspect a 'gear shift fork' being worn or bent. That is common on the newer fwd-new-rev transaxles and easy to fix.

OK waiting for coffee to be made....
is probably what's wrong 'under the hood'....
It could be the end of the shifter leaver is worn and not engaging the forks properly. if so ,it can be repaired with some welding and grinding...or buy another shifter.

It is a Peerless model 618 series, maybe a dash 0229 ?

Could even be someone took it apart and didn't align the forks with the lever. I've done that before. Take it apart and see what's going on in there.
