Hey I am new here. I browse the forum information a lot to fix our tractor. I have a problem with an older M8200 cab tractor that I have been trying to diagnose.
So I did some shredding a couple months ago and parked the tractor. Have not been able to get it started since.
What I have done:
Jumped across the transmission safety switch to disable it.
I ran a wire from the battery to the solenoid and was able to roll the engine over but it would not start.
When I turn the key to start the glow plug solenoid under the dash clicks very loudly. (don't know if that would matter)
Checked the fuses under console inside and the relays mounted up near the battery on the frame.

I still think it is a safety switch because when I roll the starter it will not start.
Where is the PTO safety switch and how can I bypass it to test if that is the issue?
Are there any other safety switches that I need to check?
Any suggestions on other causes and bypasses to get it started.
If I can get it started I can at least haul it to a dealer instead of having to pay for a service call.
Any help is appreciated.

Did you have the key in the run position when you jumped the solenoid to get it to crank?

Here is the PTO switch.

A safety switch will only keep it from cranking not running.

yes, as the engine was rolling over I turned the key all the way to the right like I was going to start it regularly. Thank you for the schematics and information on the safety switch function. That is what is puzzling. Because it will do nothing by turning the key. It is “dead”.
This makes me think safety switch.
Should the glow plug solenoid click loudly? You can feel it if you are touching it.
Thanks again for the information

It might be two problems at once. One is preventing cranking, one is preventing starting. Since it has been sitting, you might have some corrosion issues. Also, any chance you overheated it last time it ran?

I suggest you do some general troubleshooting and then focus on cranking. You can't start if you can't crank. Fix that, and go from there.

General troubleshooting? Things like:

  • Verify that you have voltage getting to your glow plugs.
  • Verify that you have fuel getting to your injectors.
  • Verify that you have voltage getting to the fuel cut-off solenoid.
  • Verify voltage getting to the starter when the key is engaged.
  • Check for corrosion on the battery & starter cables, both ends of all cables. (Bypass with jumper cables if you have ANY question about the battery & starter cables!)
  • Check cranking speed.
  • Check coolant level (back to that possible overheating question)

Ok I will continue down the check list and do the things I have not. I know I don’t get 12volts to the starter solenoid When the key is turned. I did not over heat the tractor. I will have to look into the fuel issues but like you said I would be happy if I can just get it to roll with the key.
thanks for the help.
