An M7040 has a PTO light on whenever the ignition switch is on.
I have taken the pto lever assembly off and cleaned the debris out and checked it with an ohmmeter. The switch checks good electrically and mechanically. I do not have an electrical schematic to further diagnose. The wires,as far as I can determine are good. The wires are definitely good to the plug end coming off the pto switch.

Does the two wires from the pto switch go directly to the console where the pto light is?

Has anyone had this?

The PTO switch connects to the coil of the PTO safety relay. Either the switch is stuck/defective or the relay is. You'll have to check them out with an ohmmeter.

After obtaining an electrical schematic and studying the start sequence, I found a 5 amp fuse blown. Replaced the fuse and that solved the PTO light problem of staying on all the time. Still would not start and turned out to be a bad start relay.

Any chance of getting any more details on this?
I have the same problem of the indicator is on and it wont start. Cannot even access the PTO lever assembly without taking the back tire off (and it is currentaly sitting in the middle of a large mud puddle), or at least I cannot see any other way of doing it. I tried disconnecting a pair of wires coming from it, and connecting up the two wires.

No idea what "coil of the PTO safety relay" even is or where I would look for it. Just browsed the only manual I could find online and no relevant information.

Did a bunch of work. and learned a lot.
How did you access your relays? On my M7040 tractor The dashboard is bolted in place with a bolt right at level with the hood. Meaning without a grinder it is not coming off unless the hood is removed first. But the only part not welded on the hood are the bolts inside the dashboard.

So I guess the manufacturer must of welded the hood on at the end of the manufacturing process.

This was an old thread and allend has not been logged in for a couple of years, so a reply is unlikely. On the other hand, there are a couple of members who might be able to help, but it could be a few hours until they see this post. Hang in there! Not easy I realize with your tractor stuck in a puddle.

I think you are looking for the safety switches, I don't know where the pto one is on the M tractor, but you might solve your problem by engaging and disengaging the pto knob? Or is yours a lever? If the switch isn't closed it won't start.

I don't know exactly how or what needs to be removed to make it inaccessible, but i can 100% guarantee that nothing is or welded over to make it inaccessible.

Did you get the WSM?
If not, go here:
https://www.kubota.cz/data/soubor/WSM_M6040_7040 EN.pdf

Make sure the tractor is in neutral, brake set, key on, then jump the starter solenoid to get it to start to get it out of the mud puddle.

I just bought a M7040SU hydraulic shuttle ROPS model 4x4. Having a similar problem and cant find any solutions so far. PTO works but there is no light on the dash and when you change from hour to pto mode it just says OFF. Also there is no MPH in either mode. The tractor will also start with the PTO engaged. The needle tach works. From what I have found out so far there is a micro switch on the manual PTO lever on the right rear fender, also a PTO relay under the dash. Is there a PTO speed sensor, or does the instrument cluster "compute" an RPM speed off the engine speed sensor? My Kubota dealer service department couldn't find a PTO speed sensor on this model so that's why I am assuming the instrument cluster computes it. Guess my questions are:
1. What computes the PTO RPM?
2. Do I check for continuity or voltage on the manual lever PTO microswitch?
3. How do you get the top bolt behind the hood out to remove dash cover?
4. What other troubleshooting do I need to perform. Already checked all fuses.

I can help you with a WSM if you send me a PM containing your email.

The pto speed is designed into the machine and is derived from the engine speed.

On number 3, remove the hood (called the Bonnet in the WSM).

The micro switch on the manual PTO switch on the rear fender was stuck closed. Changed out the micro switch and all is working. Thanks for all the help.
