Ok, I've been looking for a new tractor to upgrade from my 1972 ford 2000 diesel with no power steering(big upgrade haha).
I had narrowed it down to a nh workmaster 60, a kubota mx5200 or a m5660.
We'll the Kubota dealer has a used 2010 m5040 4x4, loader, r4 tires, top, 1remote with hydrologic shuttle. It has just under 1200 hrs and seems to be in good shape.
We're at about $19,000 on price.
The dealer has been very helpful to deal with so far and he knows the history of the tractor. He sold it new to a couple building a house with small farm. He says it has lived a pretty easy life.
I was wanting to go new mainly because of the usual risk of buying used and no warranty but $10,000less and not having the emissions mess that the new ones have is very tempting.
I test drove this m5040 and everything seemed to operate like it should.
Any thoughts on this model tractor and price would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The M5040 sounds like a tractor that is set up nice, don't have to deal with the emission regeneration situation, dealer knows the history and 150 hrs per year all sound good, at a very fair price.

I think all clean, late model, low hour tractors in the ...40 series have actually been more difficult to find and bring a bit higher price than even 1 1/2 years ago because of the "disinterest" in the emissions cleaning process on new tractors.

I would ask the dealer for the previous owner's phone number and call them and have a visit to confirm all that you have heard from the dealer. Find out about oil and hyd. changes, type of usage, any mechanical troubles when they owned it, why did they sell or trade it in, anything they didn't like about it.... then if you're satisfied with the answers finalize the deal.

Might make sure the rear tires are loaded, and if no have that as part of the price. Also, make sure the dealer has done a complete service on the tractor...oil, hyd, grease...so you're ready for work!

Get the Dealer to throw in some pallet forks and buy it. My L4740 is worth the same or more than I paid for it 2 years ago. You would be paying more for my L.

I'm not experienced with prices for bigger machines.

But if that was a used little B with FEL, mower and snowblower, you'd be into about the same money....

Gosh Ray, sounds like a deal like the other guys said.

Also sounds like the xx40 is quite a find!

I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal. One thing I had my mind set on was r1 tires but this one has r4s that are decent. They have over 50% left on the rears. The fronts have better tread but have some dry cracking between the treads.
He did say he could probably work out a tire and wheel swap if I wanted but I have got a price on that.
I have 70 acres with 20 acres tillable low bottoms and 50 acres of rolling hardwoods. The tractor would be used for my 200yard gravel driveway, cleaning field edges, bushhogging, foodplots, pushing up sapling thickets, etc.
What would you guys recommend with the tire situation? I think I would like the r4s for using around the yard and I've heard they're more puncture resistant but I don't want to give up the grip either.
I did think about trying to get a tooth bar or forks with the deal.
Thanks

I've got R4 on my L4240. I do not use it in loose field work. I really like them.

I have a 30 HP tractor that has R1 and I needed to replace them because they were burnt and coming apart. I actually looked and looked for used R1's because I didn't want the deep lug of new tires, and wasn't about the buy new wheels anyway.

Another benefit of good used tires is the rubber is harder and if you're in any area they has thorns, they are much less likely to be punctured by them.

I bought my L4240 down the road from you at Byrd Implement in Jackson, TN!

Thanks for the input. I will be using mine around the fields some.
Yeah, I'm not far from Jackson. Haven't checked there though, I've been pricing with the Kubota places in union city a Paris tn.

Ray, looks like the tractor has lived outside it’s whole life. You said tires were sun-checked.
I would look at hydraulic lines to see their condition. They can check much like tires.
Not a big deal at all, just something to know going in.
Looks like a great machine.

Ray - looked at your pics from a laptop, so they're bigger.

The fronts look TALL to me. May be just the difference of new vs. old tires, or is it a different size wheel? With a 4WD, you need to pay attention to the ratio of rolling circumference of front vs. rear wheels. If they're mismatched, can cause damage. I would just want to verify your front/back match.

Here's a link from tractordata.com - might have it. Kubota website should also.

Beyond that - betting I don't have to suggest:

Is it pressure washed? I don't buy anything pressure washed. With 1,200 hours, I WANT to see some grease/grime/filth!

Check all fluids/filters, etc. You said dealer has knowledge of past service - that's a great thing!

Drive it in the yard - everything work? Smooth?

Good luck!!

Thanks guys, I'll check the front tire size. I did drive it and it seemed to operate good. I didn't think to try and lift the front end with the loader. The hydrologic hoses did look really good.
I've only had 2 different tractors and neither had 4x4 or loader so I'm reading all I can trying to figure out what to look for.
I'm going to talk to him this week to get some more info on it.
