hey I got a M4950 recently and just got the WSM in the other day. I was hoping it would solve all my problems but I'm still a little unsure where to start looking. I also have some general questions about identification and if I need to fix a few things. Hour meter shows 3400. I took pics.
First off it was sold to me as a M4950 but underneath the drivers seat on what I guess is the transmission case it is branded M5950 (see pic attached). I don't know if the models just used the same parts or if I have a frankensteined tractor. The id tag on the left side is completely bleached white, but I can still make out the number 10015 which I believe is a M4950 serial number.
Underneath the transmission there look to be drain plugs but they seem to have cotter pins inside holes drilled through the center. Is this because the M4950 has a dry clutch or has something crazy been done to it? Pic of the plugs attached.
The main problem is the PTO won't engage. The lever to turn PTO from Off to Live feels stiff and wonky and takes a lot of wiggling to ever get it to go all the way to Live. I think this is where the problem is. I have looked at the linkage all the way to where it goes inside the PTO Clutch? area and it seems to be working up to that point. I want to know where I should look first - the WSM mentions a "shift fork" and "shift rod" if I take off the back end where the PTO is, and that sounds like what i'm looking for but there isn't really any information other than that.
I went ahead and serviced the front end - runs great. At least I have that going for me. I also moved around some implements with no issues. I held off on replacing the hydraulic fluids until I fix the PTO problem.
