I was moving some snow today with chains on the front for the first time. I wasn’t doing anything in particular and heard a loud pop.

I’ve already heard the controversy regarding using chains on the front, so I was kind of thinking it could have been the front, and I broke my pretty new tractor! I looked at each tire as I was moving and didn’t see anything with the way the tires were turning. No leaks either.

Later, I think I found what popped. I had broken loose some thick pieces of ice with the loader. I think the noise was running over one that popped! It sure sounded unusual and not metalic at all.

Fingers crossed that it was ice!

Chains on the front are fine, but you need to VERY careful of the 4WD of the tractor.

If there's decent "grip", you need to have to be 2WD off. If it's greasy/icy, it's okay with 4WD.

You also need to watch tight turns in 4WD, chains or not....

A lot of folks here use chains front and rear.
