Looking at a BX25D

Hi! New member here. My tractor experience is with ancient Fords and Allis Chalmers as I was growing up. I've decided that a small tractor with a loader and backhoe would be real helpful for the next year or two and I've been looking locally for something.

So, I'm looking at a BX25D in a day or so. It's a 2012 with about 1200 hours.

I'll be looking it over for leaks, excessive wear and tear, and things of that nature. Should I be looking at anything in particular?

He's asking $13750 for it. Based on Internet searches, that seems a little high for that number of hours, but then again this area usually has slightly higher prices on equipment than other areas of the country. Opinions on the price?

Thanks!

Mark,

check all your leaks and what not - that is a great idea. YOU gonna have to get under the ol girl to see this - the white plastic HST cooling fan!!!

Many a BX owner has run through the woods, a stick come up into the underside and hit that fan, knock the blades off and now the HST will overheat and then you have a hellva bill to pay.

For the average owner - replacing that fan is a $20 part.....and on a good day , 4 hours of work and cussing!!!! Have heard bills being as high as $800 for the labor charges.

Look at all the evidence of greasing.

Operate the backhoe, any slop in the handles ? FEL work as it should?
The "joystick" for the FEL should be tight, not sloppy.

Make sure all the gauges work, moisture inside the glass can cause havoc on the system too.

THE BX25 is a pitbull on steroids - true it is small and it will take longer to do some things, but a hellva tool to do it with - and a great back saver.

Offer the seller cash and see if you can get him down to $12,500 or even $13K.....

good luck!

Hokie brings good points.

Need to get on the thing and operate it - does the FEL lift front end up easy?

Does it have other attachments - MMM (mid-mount mower)? Snowblower? Both add significant $$ when new and resale...

Does it have the 3PH links if BH is off?

I'd add: maintenance history (deal breaker), what type of fluids ( esp. Kubota hydro oil or something else), what was it used for (1,200 hours in 5 years isn't occasional use). Was it ever known to overheat/get "hot"?

Tie rod rubber boot covers probably will be shot (common and not a big fix), but is steering okay and responsive (also checks for leaks in steering cylinder).

Check pivot pins, etc on BH to make sure tight.

That was $18k+ or so new. I'm a tightwad...I'd be just north of $10k, maybe $11+ tops for TLB. Could be more with attachments. But again, I'm a tightwad.....

Best wishes!!

Thanks!

It looks like I won't be able to go look at it until Friday or Saturday. Work intervened.

I definitely plan to look closely at it and operate it. Good suggestion to check on the 3 pt parts.

That does seem like a lot of hours for a 2012, it’s definately been used. If he only has a loader and backhoe, that’s lots of heavy use with just those two attachments. ( does he or did he have other implements?) I bought my BX25D in late 2014, it was $18,700 so I imagine in 2012 it was probably $17K range. That’s a lot of hours for not a lot off the original price.... 0% financing on brand new, isn’t sounding so bad, especially since you can pick up all the implements you want with it at zero interest too. Just my .02 cents worth of thoughts.

I have 1150 hrs on my '15 BX25D.

Tie rod boots. HST fan. Spend the time and look at the fuel filters. Moisture in the glass on the dash. Check all the switches. Make sure the mid and rear PTO engage. Make sure all the grease points are messy...messy is better than clean imho. Pull the screen out of the radiator...pop the hood...it's just in front of the dash...if it's clean then someone is doing their job...same with the air filter. Imho all the filters should have dates and hours sharpied on them.

Does it have a aftermarket skid plate?
