I have a silly question maybe one of you smart guys can answer. After the season is over I will change the filter on my spliter . And I was wondering IF I used like a SUDT in it rather than ATF would it last longer do damage to the pump ram or anything or nothing.
OK ok ok, when your locked in the house because you cant breath because you got stupid and wouldnt call the Doc because every thing you coffed up was green, yellow and yucky and didnt want to turn in your man card, silly things go through your mind.

Mine takes aw 32, aw45, or aw88 hydraulic oil. So udt, sudt, mystic jt-5, or universal tractor hydraulic fluid would work in it.

So, the question would be, how much do you want to spend on fluid?

Seems like regular service on it with a fluid change and you will be fine

I was told atf was one of the best hydraulic oils money can buy. Personally as far as a wood splitter goes clean oil is best, no matter what type. Hot weather heavier oil , lighter oil for cold weather operation. For all the splitter does i dont know if i would be spending the money for an expensive hydraulic oil.

I've been thinking the same thing, or something similar at least. I bought one for my parents a few years back. The manual said the use ATF if it was going to be run a certain temp; I think it was 30 or 40 F, so I put ATF in it. Thinking I should change to something synthetic.

Don't know if I qualify as one of the smart guys or not, but I have two log splitters, a craftsman that my dad bought in the late 70"s that's split a few hundred cords and still going strong, Its on its 3rd engine but still has original ram and valve, the other a three point recently built for the tractor, The filter and fluids get changed every couple of years or so and use nothing but standard Hyd.. oil found at the local farm and ranch store.
