Hi All. I just bought a B1700, and tried searching for a log splitter setup for it.
I was wondering if it would be possible to use a cylinder (close to same size as the loader cylinder), and run it off of the loader control somehow.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm by no means, a hydraulic expert.
Any input would be much appreciated!

Possible but you will not be happy with the cycle time due to the low capacity of the tractor hydraulic pump.

Get a stand alone log splitter with engine and pump.

Sure it can be done..... you'll spend much MORE than a 'standalone splitter', and it'll take 'forever' to split one log.......
so... some things just aren't meant to be.
Buy one you can tow behind ! better yet, mount one on the tongue of a trailer that the tractor can pull around.

I see from Tractor Data dot com, the B 1700 has a total flow of 5.8 gpm.... I don't know if all that would be available to a log splitter, but depending on the gpm required by the splitter, like said you may experience slow cycles or other issues..

Good luck..

Here's one ......https://www.princessauto.com/en/27-ton-196cc-gas-powered-log-splitter/product/PA0008936692
There no way I can design/build it's equal, using your tractor as the 'power source', for 1500 Canucks...well,not in one day....
it has a 6.5HP engine, runs 3700PSI to the cylinder, 14 second cycle(split and return).

Thanks for all of the replies!
One last dumb question....
If I used a similar sized cylinder to the loader cylinders (i believe they are 1.5"), wouldn't the operation be the same speed as the loader (if the loader hydraulics were disconnected from the pump)?

yes, , but those cylinders may not produce enough power to split a log. Most splitters are generating 20-30 tons of force. I dont think a loader cylinder does that much

Actually, the speed would be twice as fast as the loader movement because on your splitter you are only filling one cylinder while on the loader you are filling two cylinders.

That does not change the basic issue of not enough force to spit anything with a loader cylinder,

hmm, you'd have to increase the diameter of the hose to the splitter cylinder though to get faster response than the 2 loader cyls lines. which of course turns into a plumbing nightmare....
if you know the PSI and GPM of the tractor's hydraulics, you can go 'online' to see what 'might' be possible for splitter force and cycle times....

My 32 ton log splitter has a 5" diameter cylinder. The pump moves almost 20 gpm at 3,200 psi for a 14 second cycle time.

Your B1700 probably can produce around 1800 psi. Into a 1.5" cylinder you would get maybe 1.6 tons of force. Into a 5" cylinder you would get around 17 tons of force. With a 24" stroke on a 5" cylinder and a 5.8gpm flow rate, you would have around a 40 second cycle time.
