No need to think you are ignorant about this. You probably know more than you think you do. You probably know that pressure is presented in pounds per square inch (PSI). So if you think about that in your car tires there is pressure inside the tire that is holding up your 2000 (or so) pound car. If you have 35 PSI in the tire everything is good but if the pressure goes down the tires don’t hold the car up as well. So you know that pressure against a surface makes a force. You can see that in this formula:

Force (in pounds) = Pressure (in Pounds/square inch) * Area (in square inches)

The (square inches) of the are) are above the (square inches) of the pressure so that they cancel out and leave just the unit of pounds.

So similarly the pressure on the piston in the hydraulic cylinder creates a force. If that piston area decreases with a given pressure the force is smaller. If piston area increases at the same pressure then the force increases.
