Hello Fellow Orange Folks,

Long time reader and short time owner of the Orange machines. I've recently acquired a new to me L5240 HST non-cab machine. Couldn't be happier with my purchase as it suits our needs perfectly on our small operation. Showing 2500+ hours of moderate use it has its fair share of nicks and dings, but the performance it fantastic for its age. All the bits and pieces work, except for the PTO display on the dash. The PTO is engaged with the manual lever to the right of the operators station and it spins right up and works properly, but the digital dash display reads the PTO is off, and the orange sissy light does not illuminate either.

I recently had it in the shop to install a rear remote, and questioned the service writer about looking into the issues. Their response was 400 buck to even start looking at it, and absolutely no guarantee that they could identify the issue inside that estimate, much less a solution.

So, I prefer to maintain my equipment myself and figured to give it a shot starting here. I'll profess I do not have any service manuals on this model. I've maintained my smaller BX2200 and other larger, different colored machines, for many years and I'm comfortable wrenching until I have to start splitting tractors.

My layman opinion is there is a sensor somewhere that is not engaging to indicate to the dash that all is working. The manual level to operate the PTO obviously works fine, as the PTO spins right up when engaged. If there are any tech types geniuses out there that would be able to give me some guidance and possibly a starting point, it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help and I look forward to any responses to get me started.

On a side note, on the dash display it is showing a service indicator on the LCD display. All the fluids were replaced when I purchased it about 25 hrs ago, so I don't think it needs actual fluid attention, and may possibly be just a reminder message that shows up after X amount of hours. If you have any insight to that as well, it would be duly noted and appreciated.

First thing I would check would be will it start with the PTO on? There is undoubtedly a PTO switch somewhere near the lever. That switch would be part of the safety start interrupt circuit as well as affecting the lights on dash display. There may some overlap in the circuits involved. Shouldn't be too hard to locate some wiring diagrams to confirm that.

Copy that. Seems like a good place to start. Something unique to this model is that is has a fancy LCD display that shows a variety of select-able info (ground speed etc). One of the selection is PTO speed, so you actually set the 540 RPM based on the display, and not on the tachometer that you run up till it hits the spot marked for the 540. There is no "this is where you set the throttle for 540 PTO" mark on the tachometer. I'm sure I can research and find out what RPM is need to to achieve 540 PTO, but I would like to actually get the unit working properly.

Download the WSM for your model. Good to have for all reasons.

Could be similar, when I bought my M it was the same. PTO worked, just no indicator/and speed readout. It was a simple limit switch by the PTO lever.

I was just searching the part diagram as you were responding and found the lever switch for the PTO engagement on the diagram. I'll go check continuity when I get out to the shop and hopefully that will be a nice and easy $35 fix. I would definitely like to get the WSM for my model as well. Can you point me to the best place to find that. I haven't had any luck as of yet. Thanks

Scroll down to L3240. That WSM includes the 5240. Appears to be in 3 parts.

Be careful which L5240 WSM you get; there is a L5240 and a L5240-3.
Look at the serial number plate on your tractor and make sure which model you have; there were several differences.

Appreciate all the help and direction. I’ll confirm my serial number before I download the manual. On a good note, I removed the relay switch on the PTO engagement handle and it was indeed stuck in the closed position, showing the ECU that the PTO was disengaged. I wired the contacts together so I can continue to use the tractor and I’ll get a new switch order this week. Appreciate all the help from all and hoping I can just be a browser and not have to reach out for any other solutions. Cheers!!
