Press one side brake pedal and both sides engage as if the connecting bar was engaged…but it’s not. I can’t find a grease point and don’t see what’s locking up. Any thoughts or experience before I start tearing stuff apart?

While not an expert on the L4701, I looked at the parts diagram on Messicks
and, like my L35, the brake pedals are mounted to a common axle that actuates the left and right rear brakes.

When I rebuilt my L35, there was a ton of rust and crud on every joint, including the axle to brake pedals. A mess. Yep you're correct - no grease fitting. Not having the condition of your machine, you might try penetrating oil on every joint from the brake axle to the rear brakes, and large amounts of brake actuation to get things loosened up.

Since I was tearing the machine down anyway, I removed the console and cleaned and lubed everything in that area.

In the photo below arrows point to the axle (RIght side arrow) and the two brake pedal mounting points

Don't take offense, but did you flip the tab that locks the pedals together?

EDIT: Sorry. Just re-read the first post and it said " as if the connecting bar was engaged…but it’s not. " Some days I'm not very observant:(

Hold one UP and press the other DN….then clean and lubricate with penetrating oil….and service regularly with lubricant. ??

It’s constructed exactly as @Nicksacco showed above: each pedal stem is welded to a piece of pipe rotating on a common axle.

The whole setup is very stout. I would be strongly tempted to block up one side or the other and hit the unblocked side good and hard with a boot or hammer. Penetrating oil wouldn’t hurt it, but kind of hard to imagine it doing much good considering the horizontal orientation of the system and how much contact area there is between the axles and pipes. I have not had any issues with mine seizing, so thankfully no experience with your issue.
