Hi folks, bought this tractor used a couple of years ago, and the front left "bevel gear seal" had gone just before I got it and was replaced. Now I think the front right has gone and I'm wondering if the evidence pictured is enough, or if you have any other ways of diagnosing it. I'm no wrench, but I don't mind getting my hands dirty and am not afraid to try if it's not too much to do on your own.

Thanks!
Brent

Any thoughts at all?

A friend with a similar tractor suggested that if it's just a slight weep, that you could just top it up now and then till you have time to do a proper repair. That what I was thinking of as I just don't have time right now, but I wonder how much oil there should be in that axle when it's topped up properly? No dipstick of course, but hopefully you can just look down the plug hole and see the level in there.
Thanks,
B

Keep an eye on the level, it will be fine until you're ready to fix the leak. Typically, dirt gets in there and eats away at the seal, causing it to fail. If you had a hub seal leaking, I'd say it would be best to replace it sooner than later, as the bearing may have gone out, taking out the seal

To check the fluid level in the front axle case, set the tractor and front axle on level ground, remove the level plug (# 50) and if low fill with fluid via plug (# 30). ;)

To add to what Wolfman said, make sure you're on level ground when checking it, and it's best to check it before you start for the day. If you happen to forget to check it after you've already moved it, wait atleast 10 minutes before you pull the level plug to make sure the oil returns from the hubs, back into the main axle tube, to give you an accurate reading.

Ahhh, excellent, I'm smarter than I thought I was. So basically, the right level will have the oil just starting to seep out of the small plug on level ground?

Thanks a lot folks,
B
