Have a 2020 L3901 just passed five years (out of warranty - only 500 hours). Stopped running and got a p0087. replaced the fuel water separator filter it ran for a minute and stopped. Then replaced the fuel filter and didnt start. Pulled the fuel lines from the separator and it was full of gunk. Cleaned it out as separator housing, replaced diesel and wouldn't start. Fuel pump was dead and checked for voltage which was good. Also replaced battery after 0606 code and tested bad. Replaced the pump, bled and it started immediately and sounded great but threw both p0087 and p0088 so after a minute I shut it down to research. I did also just add som bio-kleen in the tank (fyi) since the gunk i cleared was thick and i am in hot texas when it sits outside.

About to clear the codes and start it up and let it run for a while to see how it does. googling come up with injectors or pressure sensor as potential issues. When it ran for a minute it sounded great. i cant trailer to the stealership which is an hour away and 300$ for pickup so checking for any other recommended tests or replacement parts I should order now b4 going back at it.

Heres what I think. If you start it and suck more junk into that common rail fuel system the $300 number could easily pick up another digit. I would tread very lightly until I was sure the fuel in the tank AND the fuel delivey system is clean.

If it still had junk in the tank and lines, the cleaner will send all of that junk to the separator and the fuel filter.
So you may have just clogged the filters back up again.
Also the separator housing is notorious for clogging up the inlet fitting.

yeah i ended up removing the fuel water housing and cleaned it out with air and diesel and a lot of gunk came out of the ports.

update: ran some air though the return, did one more 60 second bleed, cleared the codes and ran it for a few minutes with no more codes.

once i learned that you cant buy fuel pressure sensors separately (only aftermarket and dealer wanted to sell a new rail) i figured why not try again. so far so good.

fantastic news... good to hear the solution was within hand.

around these parts the "green snot of death" is become way to familiar on too many yards. in the old days I used to turn my nose up at adding any type of diesel conditioner. Felt not needed as long as machine was used regularly and fresh/clean diesel. Now.... 100% change of mind of late.

Future advice, pretreat all your fuel and fuel containers with a good biocide.

In case anyone comes to this thread and wants to know:
P0087 = Pressure limiter emergency open
P0088 = High rail pressure

These are from the L3301, L3901 and L4701 Workshop Manual

yes if P0088 is displayed/stored, chances are very good that the rail pressure sensor is damaged, and of course you have to get the sensor with the rail (only way it's sold from kubota). Did a number of them before I quit that nonsense.
