Most bolt on or weld on thumbs I've looked at have recommended sizes. They base it on a measurement from the dipper stick to the bucket teeth, with the bucket at 90 degrees.
After building and using my own, I'd prefer it a few inches longer than the bucket. I don't usually use the thumb at 90. The pivot point is about 3 inches higher the the bucket pivot. The lower it gets, the further from the teeth it gets. The other option is to use a longer pin and mount the thumb to the same pivot as the bucket, then the teeth ends should stay the same.
