So I acquired a L295DT recently at a very good price because it had a frozen clutch and was traded in to a dealer who didn't want to deal with the repair. Got the tractor split today, and pulled flywheel to service it and replace the pilot bearing. That's when I found something very interesting. There was no pilot bearing!

Now I had obtained replacement clutch disc, pressure plate and pilot bearing from AllPartsStore, and some other parts from Kubota dealer. Seems they gave me the correct bearing, because it has 15mm ID and 32mm OD, matching the description of the Kubota bearing. Looks like the bearing will be a tight interference fit in the camshaft end. No problem there. But the end of the Transmission input shaft is quite sloppy within the ID of the pilot bearing. I noticed some wear on the end of the transmission shaft. But it's not horrible, just quite small. Could be cleaned up with some emery cloth. Does anybody know - are these meant to be very loose fits? Guess loose is better than no bearing at all!

Any thoughts on what happened here? Previous owner tried to service the clutch, forgot to put the bearing back in, still didn't work right, left the tractor sit until clutch froze, then traded it in????????????

Tractor engine runs good. No smoke. Transmission shifts into all gears easily. So, I'm inclined to put it back together with a sloppy pilot bearing, and new clutch and T/O bearing, and see how it goes. If anybody out there thinks otherwise, please let me know. Would be a shame to go through all this work and miss something I should have dealt with.

The bearing should slide on the input shaft loose. Obviously, the looser it is, the less it supports but, it's got to be better than no bearing at all.

Sounds well thought out to me --- I would use my emory cloth to dress up that pilot shaft and put her back together as you suggest. That pilot shaft has to have a bit of clearnace otherwise you could never assemble the transmission to the engine.

Thanks for your replies. I've started to reassemble things. Pilot bearing and resurfaced flywheel are back on, but I'm still waiting for the T/O bearing and spring from Kubota. Usually, Kubota parts come promptly, but shipments have been delayed from the GA warehouse the last few days because of the bad weather they've had. I was hoping to get things back together before it got really cold here in MD, but missed that window of opportunity. I'm working in my unheated barn and it's colder than a witch's *** now!

I've got a few other issues to deal with as I get things back together, but I'll try to post on how the clutch works a little later.
