Older tractor, 1983?, been sitting for 9 months and won't start. New diesel and I tried to bleed it at the valve by the transfer pump but nothing. There is fuel to the water separator and from there to the transfer pump but not from the transfer pump to the injection pump. So I am thinking it is a bad transfer pump but I'm not sure how to remove it or if that is even a good idea. I thought maybe I should take it out of the loop and hook up a electric fuel pump to the fuel lines and assume that if I have fuel moving then it's the transfer pump.

Study this illustration to be certain you understand where the fuel pump is located. It is a mechanical pump. If its diaphragm fails you will often find the crankcase oil level too high because fuel is getting past the diaphragm and into the crankcase.

I would start by disconnecting the output line from the pump which is #140, crank the engine and fuel should pulse out.

If no fuel comes out either the pump has failed or the suction side of the pump is plugged with debris.

Instead of an electric pump use a squeeze mustard container filled with diesel and stick its nozzle unto the line to the injection pump. Now you are certain the injection pump is getting fuel.

Then, if it starts and lift pump is confirmed defective, diaphragm is available separately from Kubota. Colemans list the complete pump as discontinued... but market is flooded with aftermarket knock offs for less than the diaphragm. No special skills to change it.... 2 bolts, 2 lines.

Thanks, much appreciated, that was a lot of good info. I know that no fuel comes out of the transfer pump so I'll assume that it's the problem. I'll try the mustard bottle trick (that's good) but plan on pulling the pump to check diaphragm and replace if that's it.
