I have a 1986 L2550 DT. It was running fine, I turned it off and went to start about a half hour later and it would not start. The lights would come on on the dash but the starter will not engage when the key is turned to the start position. When the key is returned to the on position no lights on the dash. They will come back on maybe in 15-20 mintues when i tried again. I replaced a bad battery, cleaned the cables and the ground lug where it attaches to the frame. I have good voltage to both the starter and the ignition switch. I have also checked the fuses and all are good.

Probably a safety switch. I assume that you are pressing the clutch in as that safety switch is being pressed but stress may be making you forget to do the normal steps.

You should see if you have any voltage to the starter solenoid activation wire from the key through the safety switches to the starter (probably a black wire with a white stripe).

I see one safety switch - not sure where it is located, perhaps clutch or PTO ......

Check the slow blow fuse that it is in this diagram - it is shown right of the starter near the bottom of the diagram.

On older tractors we have seen owners with starting problems and the cause turns out to be rust between the starter and the engine block which prevents the starter having a ground path..

To rule this out, use a jumper cable from the battery negative terminal to the starter mounting bolt(s).

Jumping the starter can also be useful in isolating the problem.

Starter jumping is inherently dangerous. You can be run over by your own tractor. Have someone in the seat with the brakes applied when jumping.

Almost anything metallic can be used. Often a screw driver shank works well.

Expect some light sparking as the connection is made.

If the starter and its connections are good, the engine should crank immediately.

tried jumping the safety start switch. same response. all dash lights go out when moving key to the start position does not turn over. lights do not come back on when key is moved back to on position. Is there a relay in the system that could cause this?

Have you tried swapping the battery with a known good battery? I’ve had batteries with internal shorts that act like that.

Doh the lights going out should have been a huge clue that it was power related not safety switches.

Glad you found the problem even with the red herrings we were throwing in the path of repair.
