L245dt

Hello all, I am just about to buy a L245DT. I have a few questions though.
When turning the tractor slightly it feels as though the Diff lock is on. The seller doesnt seem to know in which position the lever should be,and the lever doesn't seem to stay at any particular position, can anyone help with this?

Also how much smoke is permissible from the breather pipe that hangs below the tractor before one will have a problem ie rings? is that a big job?

so im wondering if this will be a good choice for me?
I want the tractor for grass slashing of 6 acres.
Thanks in advance for any help
Regards Dale

Welcome to the forum Hugdale. So far just from the questions you are asking, it does not sound too good. The dif lock should stay in the up position unless you push it down with your foot. It is probably a broken spring or broken or bent linkage. But if it has been that way for a while I don't know what kind of damage it can do. As far as blow by you don't want to see too much. If you are getting blow by just running it around the yard, what is it going to do when you are working it hard for long periods of time. Might be a project tractor and if you want a project then thats fine. Wait for a few more responses before you do anything. There are people on here that know these tractors much better than I and they will respond, just give it a bit of time. Good luck and keep us posted.:D Dusty

Hello and welcome to the forum. I second both of dusty's comments. I wish I had more to add, but dusty seemed to hit both areas of concern perfectly.

Good luck in your decision.

I have told the guy that is selling that i want the diff checked and sorted before i will take it and also a diagnostic costing done with regards to the blow back.
The diff handle does seem to be missing a spring as it seems to just flop around in no particular position. Apart from those 2 things it seems to be in pretty good nic. Also price not to bad 25000 south african rands.
Will let you know what happens and what i decide.

As a word of caution regarding the dif lock.

This is as I was told by my dealer when I purchased my tractor:

When engaging the dif lock all things must be equal. Other words, both rear tires must be spinning at the same rate when engaged or not moving at all.
If not then damage can occur and it's a whole rear end tear down. Very pricey repair and can surpass the cost of the tractor easily.

Me, I take it with a further step of caution. I only engage the dif lock when everything is at rest, no wheels are spinning. I can not afford such a repair.

The scary thing about the tractor you are looking at is the dif lock is in a floating kind of stage. If it where to be out and one wheel is spinning and the other isn't and the dif lock drops in, that could be very bad.

You are doing the right thing requesting the seller to have it looked at. I'm actually surprised he is going to do it. You are very lucky.

Good luck and please keep us updated,
Scott
