L2250 Starting Problem.

My L2250 was having periodical starting problems. Some times it would start and other times just slick. I had the starter reconditioned, didn't fix the problem. Load test on the battery said I needed a new one. Purchased the same size (27oo Series) with 675 CCA Marine Deep Cell battery that was in the tractor. Now it starts everytime, but the battery light stays on in the dash. I checked the alternator and it is charging at 14.2.
I have been told that I don't need a deep cell marine battery, but that's what was in the tractor when I bought it and I have never had a problem for 3 years until this summer. Suggestions???

Are you certain you have an alternator?

Looking at Messicks parts list for a L2250DT shows a dynamo.

A dynamo will have two blue wires coming from it.

Please check and advise.

According to the plate on the device it is a Denso 12V Regulator. The device is refer to as a regulator in the owner's manual also. No Blue wires coming out. One red main heavy wire and two smaller wires out of a plastic plug.

What was 'in' the tractor and the 'correct' battery are 2 different things. You need a starting battery not a deep cycle marine trolling motor battery. The amperage delivery characteristics ate entirely different between the 2. I r will wok, run it until it expires and replace it with the correct one, a 'starting battery', not a deep cycle

I remember a lesson taught to us by eserv regarding a warning light on some older tractors.

It is not a charge warning light but an electrolyte level warning light. The confusion comes because the dash symbol is of a battery whereas the No charge dash indicator is a lightning bolt.

The original battery came with a sensor in one of its cells to detect when the electrolyte level dropped too far thus reminding you to top up the battery.

New batteries of any type have no such sensor. This causes the dash to have its level light not get a ground through the electrolyte and turn ON.

Permanently grounding the wire that connected to the level sensor will turn off the dash light.

If this is not what is going on and if you really do have an alternator, the voltage regulator will be a smooth black box.

If you have a dynamo, the regulator will be aluminum with fins.

There are two separate parts of the system and you seem to be confusing your answers...
There is something to generate the voltage (alternator or dynamo) and then something to regulate the voltage to the battery (regulator).

The original question was on the wires out of the generating part. It will be a rotating device with a belt driven pulley and wires going to the regulator. Sometimes they look similar to the alternator on a car, other times they are behind the fan and mistakenly thought of as the water pump.

This may all be moot now but if the problem persists please let us know what color wires exit the voltage generator being turned by the belt.
