L2000DT Tractor Transmission

Can anyone tell me what the small spindle is for just below the oil level plug on my L2000DT Tractor Transmission. I removed this while working on another issue and now cannot get it to screw all the way back in. It looks like it may push on something internally. Photos attached.

That is the keeper pin for the main shift fork shaft.
Very gently (not trying to change gears)pull the shift lever backwards, while looking in the hole.
Your looking for a slot to appear to be able to slide the pin back in.
If while moving the shift lever back you don't see a hole or slot to put the pin back in, you might need to move the shift lever forward (BUT CAUTION) if you go too far it could pull the shaft out of the housing which will require you to remove the top of the transmission to realign it.
