Hello all, new here.

I've been the proud owner of little Kubota L185 for about a year.
Shes been useful and not given any issues until yesterday, when the engine oil filter popped off.

It appears that too much pressure built up in the filter and the threads stripped, or maybe it was overtightened.
Has anybody had this happen before? Anything I should check? I got it shut down quickly.

Since its time for an oil change anyway, what oil and filter are recommended?
I do not see any specific oil weights listed in the service manual.
I am in a warm climate (middle Georgia).

Would something like Rotella T6 be appropriate?

Thanks!
Kurt

T6 4W40 or 15W40 would be fine.
Get a OEM filter.

I also have a L185F but have never had any problems with the filter.

I assume the filter treads stripped but how are the threads on the tractor?

Hopefully they are OK, since I don’t think you can get just that threaded part from Kubota.

One reason to use a Kubota filter is that if the filter blows apart, you can go to Kubota for recourse for a defective part. With the aftermarket part, you will be chasing feathers in the wind. It still isn't a guarantee that Kubota will replace your engine if it were damaged by a defective Kubota filter, but you would stand a better chance if it went to a jury trial. The cost difference between a Wix filter and a Kubota filter isn't going to break the bank, and when you spend the type of money that your tractor costs, what is an additional $10 or $15 for the OEM filter? People spend a lot of money buying the very best oil and then they cheap out on the filter. Never made any sense to me.

Do you use only Ford/Mopar/Delco/Honda/Suburu/Nissan/etc. filters on your cars for the same reasons?
Are Kubota branded filters from a Kubota filter factory in Japan?

Thank you all for the very helpful answers!

I have Rotella T6 15W-40 for the truck, so I will run that, which makes it easy!

The threads on the filter receiver are fine, fortunately, but I did have to pick out the threads that stripped out if the filter. It was a WIX 51516, so I assume the previous owner over tightened. He was not the most technical, as evidenced by getting a decent deal because he could not get it to crank (he was turning the key instead of the start switch...).

I agree with the comments on using quality oil filters.

I hope to have her back and on the job this weekend.
Will keep you all updated.

Thanks,
Kurt

Four OEM filters for my L45 bought last year. The three hydro filters were made in China, the oil filter was made in Indoniesia. Filters for my RTV were made in Mexico.
