I have a Kubota L1802DT (D1102 engine) that has just started giving me a bit of trouble.

On 2 occasions recently when starting it has gone to full revs for about 5 secounds before returning to idle. The first time it did it, I thought I must have had my foot on the throttle, but the second time, definately not.

On 2 other occasions it has refused to start and just turned over endlessly whilst puffing blue smoke out the exhaust. Eventually it has started, and is fine after that, no smoke at all. I have noticed however that it feels down on power a bit as I have to have the throttle wider open to achieve the same revs as before. Also it now stalls if I close the throttle completely.

When it (eventually) starts it seems to happen a bit at a time and I need to keep the starter engaged while it comes to life (hope that makes sense). It sort of seems to fire then not then fire a bit more then not and then eventually run on it's own.

The tractor is a grey import that had the engine completely rebuilt when imported. It only has 100 hours on it, but that is over 5 years so I'm wondering if it just needs a proper service?

The problem is actually worse the longer between starts. If it's only a couple of days it will start after about 10 secs of cranking, if it's been a couple of weeks, then it takes several minutes.

I have replaced the glow plugs in an effort to solve the problem, but no luck so far.

The new glow plugs are working (as were the old ones as it turns out).

BTW it is warm where I am, in fact some days it's really hot, so the cold is not a factor.

The air filter is a single unit, and one of the things I first did when it wouldn't start was remove it to see if that would help. I't didn't. The filter is reasonably new, so I'm not surprised it is not the issue.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Cheers

The over reving makes me think it is over fueling due to poor injector delivery. I would take the injectors out and have them checked.
When my L175 did this, my injectors were 350psi low on pop off pressure and the spray pattern was more like a dribbling hose. The fuel can puddle up when it is not properly misted and when the engine starts up this puddled fuel will burn resulting in an over rev till the excess fuel is gone.

Compression is key to a diesel so a check would make sure it is up.

My .02 cents ;)

Problem solved

I had the tractor serviced today and the mechanic solved the problem.

It was a sticky rack and I now even know how it works along with the govenor system of springs and fly weights.

There is however a bit of a down side in that the springs are old and stretched a bit which is not allowing me max revs. He was also not sure if he could get new ones, being a grey market tractor.

So does anybody know where I might get govenor springs (there are 3 of them) for a Kubota D1102 engine.

Vic, you are a legend!

I have been searching high and low for those part numbers.

Do you have a cross reference manual or something? I would really like to get hold of such a thing.

Cheers
