This feels like a newbie question, and being that I am a newbie. I guess its ok. I recently purchased an L175 Kubota Tractor and I am having a major problem getting the deck belt to stay on. I have no paperwork on the tractor and have not found anything to help with me to ensure I have the belt on correctly. Or is it a case of the belt has been stretched and needs to be be replaced?? Any help is appreciated.

Is the deck a Kubota part or is it made by someone else?
Honestly I don't know that answer...in looking at it...it looks homemade to me...but this was made in 76. And I will see if I can give a decent description of the pulley layout. The belt is a woods 18186 (5/8 X 197.8"). Right and left blade pulley and a rear PTO pulley. In the center of the deck there is a "tri-pulley". I will get some pictures posted to see if that helps any at all. I am fairly sure I have the path of the belt right, but there always seems to be a "twist" in the belt somewhere. Anytime I engage the pto...it will work for a min..maybe 2 and belt comes off again. And again..I maybe get my "pencil" out to help with the diagram

Since it is a Woods 18186 belt, and the layout sounds the same; I will guess that you have a Woods L59 K17 mower deck. It discharges out the center, towards the rear, right? The manual is available from the Woods website as a .pdf download. The belt does not go on the way logic says it should. One side has a 3/4 twist and the other side has a 1/4 twist when you get it right.

I have an abysmally slow connection, or I would send the manual to you via email.

To put the belt on, I start with the belt under the rear end of the tractor. Put it around the right side of the lower groove on the center sheave, then take it around the left sheave, bring the belt to the center groove of the center sheave, then to the right side sheave, and back around the top groove of the center sheave. now you bring it back to the rear of the tractor, you should have the 3/4 twist on the left side and the 1/4 twist on the right. Then bring it up the back and around the PTO drive pulley.

I have to take the cover off the left mandrel when I put on a new belt, the belt will fit between the cover and sheave on the right side. Adjusting the idlers below the PTO has been a trial and error thing with me. The right one should be lower than the left.

When I got my L175; it came with a new belt, and no manuals. I tried to put the belt on for a couple of days before I found the manual online. The new Woods belt didn't last a mowing season before it was getting stretched out and jumping off every time I used it. I priced a new belt at the local dealer, and almost had a heart attack: $78.00 and change, plus shipping. I found a belt online for $42.00 shipped. It has been working all this year, and hasn't needed adjusting yet.

Oh yeah, the PTO needs to be in the 1000 RPM range, and the tractor at governed speed to run the best. I usually mow in 4th or 5th gear, depending on the grass.

Hope this helps,

Robert

I have been trying to remember the website I bought my belt from; I think it was www.vbeltsforless.com, but I'm not sure. I know I googled the belt number to find it.

I want to say the belt was made in India, wherever it was made it has lasted a lot longer than the only new Woods belt I have used.

Check the bearings in the idlers, where the belt turns forward; if those bearings aren't in good shape, you won't get very good life out of the new belt. I am using 4 1/2" sheaves with weld in centers from the local farm store. I replaced both of mine for less than what Woods wanted for one. Will they last as long? I don't know, but I can source the bearings on these locally.

Grease the spindles before you use it, I have a feeling you don't want to price them.

I don't know what type of tires are on your tractor, but mine has turf tires; 12 psi lets it cut level.

Don't be afraid to ask any other questions that come up.
