I just bought an early l1500 worked fine for a few days and now when I turn the starter it makes a sluggish turning sound and won’t crank. Eventually after trying several times it quit even trying to turn. I hooked cables up to the battery and it did nothing. I’m guessing starter but not sure? Also the fuel filter on this has a bolt on a canister, is that the filter or is it a cover and there’s a screw on under there. Also if it is a bad starter is there a guide you guys can point me to on how to take it off.

Starter is straight forward unless some implement (front end loader) is in the way

Disconnect the battery negative cable
take a picture of the starter wiring so you can put it back on the same way
remove wiring
remove the two bolts (one might be a nut on a stud)
remove starter (may need to move towards the front of the tractor about a half inch before it can be rotated out

It didn't over heat on you did it?

See if you can manually turn the engine.

ac3510!??
Clean battery terminals and ground to chassis or engine. Get your battery tested before you replace starter. Jump the solenoid wire to the hot on the starter.

options / ideas...

Replace the battery cables.
Jumping with a good battery connected to the original battery won't help when the battery cables are bad.
Also check fan belt! maybe it's a tad loose or glazed so alternator is not recharging the battery.

Bypass everything and connect good battery using jumper cables directly to the starter, see if it spins over fast(normal).

One other comment is to use a newer style gear reduction starter instead of the direct drive that was used on the tractor originally.

Since it is new to you be sure to use the decompression system to let it spin up to speed with the old style starter.
