Hi all, I'm new to this forum and have just bought a B6000E with and FEL and BH. Before I do any serious digging, I am going through the BH, I have found that both the swing cylinders need to be redone, but will eventually redoing all the cylinders and controls and hoses. I have taken off one of them and am trying to remove the rod guide and for the life of me I cannot get it out. There is only on hole in it and it doesn't screw on/off. I have removed the retaining ring and can get the guide to spin but cannot get it out of the cylinder. I will be replacing the piston arm and the guide as well as all the seals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes. according to the backhoe repair manual, its called a rod guide. It has a brass ring around where the rod comes out. Is the whole inerds supposed to come out along with this? I have been told to reconnect it to the hydro pump and SLOWLY apply hydro pressure to "POP" the rod out.......AnNy help and or suggestions would be very helpful. This is my first cylinder rebuild so I will be looking for a lot of assistance. Thanks:confused:

A blow gun and good air compressor are your friends. cap off the fitting the goes to the top of the cylinder(some times it is at the bottom with a hard line going to the top), then apply full air pressure with blow gun into the fitting in the bottom of the cylinder, it should pop out. or put it in a vise, and push it back in a pull back out really hard, should come out.

I have tried to put it in a vise and pulling on it....no luck....I will try with compressed air, but I don't think it will work. Thinking of trying to rig something to use a slide hammer. Seems to be really in there....Can anything rust together inside the cylinder?

on some John Deere's you may have to push the end cap down into the cylinder and there may be another locking ring, or seal that must be removed before you can completely pull it out, may be the same in this case.

Well, tried the compressed air and it pushed the rod but its still not coming out. As for the possibilty of a secondary locking ring, there is none. I checked for this and the repair manual only shows the single locking ring....Its very frustrating.....the cylinder looks to be in its original shape, no obvious deformaties. The rod goes out all the way to the end and then seems to bottom out and will not go any further.

If the metal outer seal ring had two holes at either end to put ring pliers into then the whole piston should slide straight out of the cylinder after getting that "rod guide" out, as I remember. We kept the cylinder attached to the tractor, ran a small pipe through the piston hole and yanked real real hard.

Have you tried the other cylinder? That one may come out alot easier and give you a bit better understanding of their innards and how to attack the problem.

The other type I've seen is described here:

A bit vague but it may help.

Since I am replacing the piston anyway, I even tried securing the cylinder in a vise and tried banging out the piston with a 4lb sledge and cold chisel...to no avail! Well, will be going to the hardware store to get some things to rig up my slide hammer. If that doesn't work I will be chaining the cylinder to a tree and the piston to my truck......!!!!

firejunkie is probably on the right track. There should be a heavy wire retaining ring that you normally get at by pushing the rod guide "down" into the cylinder an inch or so to gain access to. Once it is removed you can remove the rod guide. Sometimes the lower O-ring will hang-up in the retaining ring groove on the way out make it seem as if something is stuck.

Well, I had to resort to my last post and ended up anchoring the cylinder to a tree and the piston rod to the tractor. After several good tugs ( and even stalling out the tractor one time) I finally got it apart:D There were no other locking rings in the cylinder and the bore looked smooth and free of gouges or scratches. I ordered the seal kit, rod guide and piston rod for both swing cylinders from Big Orange Parts. To replace these cylinders would have cost me $1000.00+. It's costing me less than $300.00 to rebuild them..... Thanks for all the tips and advise.
