Hello Everyone. I am new and thank you for hearing my problems.

Hello All,

The engine is a 4 cylinder Kubota. V-2003 non turbo.

The engine is a 2009.

Was working fine then go to start it the other morning and it spewed a white/grey smoke for about a minute before it cleared up.

Does it each time I start it now.

Other things to note:

- it does fire right up no cranking necessary.
- spews heavy white/grey smoke for a minute or so and runs rough. Then seems to run fine with a little blue smoke here and there.]
- Coolant is up .

The welder is stuck on an island job so I cant just take it to a shop to look at.

Has any one got any ideas what this might be?

I was thinking a bad injector.....

My other question is will I be doing damage to the engine by starting it if fuel was leaking in?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Based on what I am reading into here, this welder is not used a whole lot in a continuous mode? Point being, is the fuel "bad" - How long has the fuel been in the tank ? You say coolant is up, that too was my first thought, a head gasket allowing water by, one way to tell is pop the cap and start it up and look for bubbles.

You did not mention the filters for the fuel or changing the fuel.

But I think you hit the problem from the get go :

Looking into this a bit deeper, (pulled this off the net)

White smoke is caused by raw, un-burnt fuel passing into the exhaust stream. Common causes include:
· Incorrect fuel injection timing
· Defective fuel injectors
· Low cylinder compression

"When white smoke occurs at cold start and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing"

"Poor atomization of the fuel may be caused by low injection pressure. The fuel droplets are too large and therefore harder to ignite and burn. As a result combustion is incomplete resulting in White Smoke."

Blue smoke aint a good thing ..........

how many hours on this engine?

the filters are all new.

Fuel is new and I do use if regularly.

engine hours are 1500

low compression I think would result in hard to start condition as well....it fires right up.

The blue smoke is slight.....I am thinking just running rich...too much fuel maybe.

I am mostly worried about damaging something from all the raw fuel that is running in cylinder when I shut it off.

The condition is much like starting a diesel when it is extremely cold and a diesel engine doesn't run on all cylinders and then slowly comes to life.

But this takes about a minute to clear up ....and its hot a heck here rightnow.

Also happens if I shut the machine off for half an hour or so.

Is smoke more white than grey. If it is be suspicious of antifreeze. Bad injectors usually take more than a minute to clear up and usually will notice a slight miss if bad enough.

Leaking injector is my pick.
Simple check, run it shut it down for a length of time then pull the injectors and look for a wet cylinder, that will be the bad injector.

I would say whitey grey....maybe dirty white? Little bit of black here and there.

Spews it out in a big cloud for a minute or so then starts to even out.

Then just a little bluey smoke. Not constant but pretty regular.

I would check the glow plugs as well. Manually and/or for continuity. Don't know what value, but should be a few ohms, not open.
