New guy with two engines from unknown machines.
Both engines were from Reel mowers.

Two years ago I bought a D950

the D950 the previous owner states it was from a Jacobsen mower,Mower broke so he removed engine to use for something else later on.
I purchased the engine in a non running state.Seller sprayed something in the intake he claimed was diesel, cranked it its it popped and sputtered.I bought it.

Got it home could not get it to start.Tested glow plugs and all three were bad.
With new plug she fires right up.
My plan for the engine is in a boat with a closed loop cooling system.
At the time all the internet info I find states its could be a 17 horsepower all the way up to a 21 horsepower.
Found German and semi English manuals.
Found its a common engine in multiple machines from Bobcats to B8100 tractors,Onan genesets and marine engines.

Except Kubotas site does not list any info on the lil engine.
Today I found a manual listed for a Kubota D950 BBS-1 Series 1
And that manual is my engine.
I looked at all Tractor Data kubotas that had this engine, most commom rpm stated 2500-3200 rpm's

Questions:
Why is this design discontinued?
Whats the compression ratio?...….I'd like to think its 22:1 like all the rest of the N/A engines.
How do I determine the actual horsepower and rpm rating without knowing what It came out of.

So this year I found a deal on a D1105E with plenty of info on the web.
I mounted this engine into my boat project.Ordered a TD02 turbo for later on.
Again all I know is it came from a reel mower. No name brand or model.
How do I find out critical engine info?

is it 24 horsepower or is it 28 horsepower?

Id like to turbo the D950 since its smaller and lighter but without knowing the compression ratio I'd be afraid to destroy it.

Unless you know exactly what it came out of, there really isn't any way to exactly find out which motor you have unless it has the stickers on it that say the Power rating in KW.
All the D950 were the same compression 22:1

I figured as much.
Was hoping there were info casted on the block that could point too an answer.

The 950 has no stickers,Casted on the block 927cc

On both motors there will be a stamped serial number, sometimes that can give clues.
Look on the flat of the block facing up just outside of the injection pump.

D950 was discontinued a long time ago for a lot of reasons. One being emissions. US emissions killed a ton of old diesels off.

D1105 is still around in different revisions. There are a LOT of different D1105's out there so like NIH said, you need the info off of the sticker, at the least the serial number.

The basic model number just tells you how many cylinders it has and what the rough idea of the engine size is, there are more numbers/letters that are needed to know how much power it makes and a ton of other things that are unknown--at least until you get the rest of the model numbers off the stickers. If no stickers, little info is available.

Ill get the serial numbers when I can get home.

I visited Tractor Datas site and looked at other machines with the D950 and found that the different horsepowers also list some different bores and strokes.
Is there a way without head removal to determine the bore and stroke.

B8200 19hp at 2600rpm 75x70mm bore and stroke
B7200 17hp at 2500 rpm 75x70mm
B1750 20hp at 2600 rpm 76x71mm
B1550 17hp at 2600 rpm No bore and stroke info listed.

Only Jacobsen reel mower I found with a d950 lits 21hp.

I read somewhere about a different goveoner spring on the D1105 to get 3600 rpms.Supposedly even with the screw set for max rpms it can not attain over 3000
Any info on that.

I think the information your getting is a little flawed as All the books from kubota that I have (and it's a lot of them) all say the same bore and stroke for a D950, if the bore and stroke changed it wouldn't be a D950! ;)

Yes they change the governor springs but they also change the governor weights and possibly other things to change the RPM range of operation.

One reason for the difference in HP is what systems the engine was equipped with.
A Tractor with a D950 will have less HP rating than a D950 used in a Jacobsen lawn mower because there is no Fuel cam driven hydraulic pump, where is reality it's the same motor.

Appreciate the response and help.

I really do not need the D950 now that I have the D1105 since at its lowest horsepower range it will meet my needs.

Just figured it would be great to know exactly what I have incase I sell it or later add a turbocharger.

I did come across a tractor pulling forum where there is a D1105 running 40 pounds of boost and still holding together.
He machined the governor weights and claims 5000 rpm.

Diesel motorcycle forums are claiming 4000 rpms with only a screw adjustment.
