I have to take the floor pan off of my BX22 to get to the piston for the 3 point hitch, and replace the seal. I have everything loose, but I can't see how to remove the knob from the 3 point hitch adjustment rod that is directly under the seat, and how does the mower deck height adjustment knob come off? I looked in the shop manual, but all it says is to remove it. I don't want to break anything, so can someone tell me how to get these 2 knobs off?

Pretty sure both are just pressed on, Use a heat gun or hair dryer on hot to heat the plastic up and they should pull off. ;)

Thanks... I will give it a try in the morning. I hope that it all goes back together as easy as it is coming apart.

Before you heat them, make sure that they aren’t threaded on. Some of those knobs are threaded.

Since BAP brought it up, I thought I better go look and make sure, On the three drop speed knob, look for a hole for the roll pin, if you don't see it externally, it's pressed on, and the deck height knob is definitely pressed on.

I'm not speaking from experience... only from speculation.... but I'd be willing to bet it'd be safer to use the heat gun on the shaft rather than directly on the plastic knob.
By heating the shaft... the heat should travel up to inside the knob thereby softening it to allow it's release from the shaft. (Instead of heating the knob until it deforms.)

Let me know if it worked as I imagined. If it destroyed your tractor, then blame NIW for not warning you to ignore me. :D

I pulled the speed adjustment knob off. Mine was pressed on. Came off easy with the right tool behind it to push it off. The dealer showed me the parts break down. There is a pin but it went through the steel shaft and not the knob. The knob has a slot in it for the pin. The other knob I pulled the nut off of the bottom of the shaft and removed the whole assembly.

Mine is a BX24.

P.S. No heat was necessary for me.

With a little amount of heat, they both pulled off with a little effort. The 3 point knob required some persuasion from my soft faced hammer. The deck height adjustment knob I was able to pull off. Both showed signs of rust under them. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Now, onto the next problem, which is why the fenders and deck needed to come off.

I put the heat from my heat gun directly on the knob. Once it was warm to the touch, they both pulled off.

DustyRusty, thanks for the answer. I never replaced the knobs on the L305. They are kind of it's scar marks, conversation starter.
