How Much DEF Usage is To Much?

Reading this could save you thousands of dollars.

I noticed that my SVL95 seemed to be consuming more DEF than normal. I was using one 2.5gal container to every two tanks of diesel (2.5gl/55gl). Last September I asked the dealer if this usage was normal, he said yes.

Fast forward to 3/15/23. I was mulching, the machine threw the code E:9521 (Pre NOx sensor), and the dreaded code E:9601 (Machine going into limp mode). I trailered it and took it to the dealer.

The diagnosis was: Some time ago, the DEF injector began leaking. The leak was dripping on the Pre NOx sensor. The additional DEF fluid in the system made the NOx sensor fail. Kubota had to replace both the NOx sensor and the DEF injector, $2065.00 and $1738.00 respectively, +labor.

Post Repair: The SVL is now consuming 2.5 gallons of DEF every 5 -6 tanks or 2.5gl/168gal. I was lucky because my SVL was still with the “warrantee date” so the parts and labor were free.

I also discovered that these parts do not need to be a dealer install and programing. This is farely simple to fix. It's a repair that a normal Joe can perform. Visit YouTube and search: Shaners, NOx Sensor Trouble Code? Kubota SVL95-2S Diesel. He’ll walk you through the process. Note: I’m not affiliated or know Shaner. I hope this helps some folks.

9/15/24 Update: I also discovered that if the intercooler that is located in the back of the Skidsteer by the rear window (gray cover) gets impacted with dirt of debris, the machine will consume a lot of DEF fluid. My machine was using 1.5 gallons per day. I cleaned the cooler and now I'm back to normal usage.
Good Luck and Be Safe
