Apparently the shooting victim wasn't injured IN the shooting. Our local TV station's headline indicates the injury was subsequent to the shooting. Don't know why this matters, but they always have headlines like "3 Injured Following 2 Car Collision". I suppose that could happen as a result of a fight breaking out after the crash.

When he fell from being shot, he hit his head causing an injury (I really have no idea, but love to make up stories).

Yes, reporting quality has greatly diminished over the years. Yet, in all fairness, the readers ability to read and understand has diminished too. It appears that the attention span has decreased to the length of a Tik Tok video.

Why have an attention span for news when they'll tell you what to think and how to feel nowadays instead of just reporting the news...

I understand some divergence from grammatical rules has to be taken at times in writing headlines due to space limitations, but the example in the original post is much longer than a more accurate, “Man injured when shot…”.

The quality of writing and editing in news reporting has degraded substantially in my lifetime. Much of what I see in our local news would not get a passing grade in my high school English classes. It’s another symptom of the “get it out fast, to hell with accuracy” mentality that seems to now dominate news.

Sad part if you were somehow connected with an incident, and read the report or watch the news, you might wonder if they were reporting on the same thing you saw

Being in the same market as you- the repeated simple spelling errors in headlines on all three local channels are unforgivable. My elementary school child should not be a better speller than the "professionals", and I have to assume those "professionals" have access to spell-check which makes it even worse.

I completely agree that the quality of "journalism" has plummeted over the last two or three decades. Journalists used to be educated, informed and literate, and they took pride in their work. These days so many are the Instagram/TikTok crowd who only care about how many followers they have, how many likes they get, and how many times their drivel is retweeted.

Redundancy in speech and writing seems to be the norm now as well e.g. "continue on", "raise it up" or "lower it down".

Years ago, I dealt with a couple/few local newspaper reporters regularly/daily.

A lot of folks, when they're quoted in the newspaper, will protest "that's not what I said!"

Honestly, a lot of times the reporters are pretty good at capturing stuff like that......

I got so I could care less......

I was quoted at length in an article by one reporter. Good person I trusted. Older person; worked with his wife and knew their kids.

I had NOT spoken to that reporter about the subject at all.....

He made me sound good - - I never mentioned it and neither did he....... ;)

I saw this clickbait headline on Google News a few minutes ago. A big contributor to this sort of illiteracy is that today's "journalists" didn't grow up reading books, and well-written books at that. They've grown up reading Facebook, Instagram, Twitter posts or the comments section found at the bottom of most "news" articles.

Ive seen the opposite with one of those news stations "On you side" broadcasts for "Victims" who didn't know where else to turn.

The story happened to be about my wife's employer, the nursing home where she worked at, and she had direct involvement in the incident investigation.

A family was spouting off how "Momma" was assaulted by a male nurse in an inappropriate fashion. Momma had severe dementia, (mentality of a 1yo) only had female aids and nurses, the family was in the room the whole time, and the only person left alone with grandma throughout the day was a male relative. The one time a male aid was in the room was to gather trash up, and the whole family was present at the time.

The news station had the story from the family which was complete BS (looking to sue) and the nursing home and staff couldn't respond or defend themselves due to hippa laws.

Yep - - dealt with that with quite a few circumstances I was involved in.

The "victims" complaining the Gubbermint wasn't protecting them from whatever horrid situation they've found themselves in.

Sometimes it was total BS on their side. Usual complaint was not rectified quick enough for them. Others I would have agreed with them.

If there was pending litigation, I couldn't comment at all.

Thankfully it was all before Facebook.

That seems to be where everyone goes to bitch complain about Gubbermint, the price of a cheeseburger at local restuarant, the referee at kids' basketball game, and _______(insert here ;) ).

I don't do Facebook.....

Everything is adjudicated by keyboard heroes anymore.
