Horrible grinding noise and tractor won't go in forward or reverse!

Hey all,

I am new to this forum but have benefited greatly from the wisdom on this site. I recently purchased an awesome late 70s model B6000 4wd. This is my first tractor and I was doing some Bush hogging recently and everything was going fine until I tried to go in reverse with the pto in the 1 position. A horrible grinding noise came about so i immediately cultched and killed the engine. I then unhooked the Bush hog restarts the engine and tried to move forward. But what happened made my heart sink. The tractor won't budge. I looked underneather than the center shaft is spinning but none of the gears work in either range and the pto no longer spins. I fear i have caused great damage. Any ideas as to what happened and what kind of repair I am looking at would be greatly appreciated. The pto has a reversed on it because from the factory the pto spinner counts clock wise. Also the tractor did nudge forward for a few feet under its own power then stopped and made the grinding noise again. Is I possibly the clutch or transmission or something else. Please help!!!

Do you have a one way clutch on the PTO output?
If not it's possible that you have either damaged the clutch or other gears in the drive system.

I opened up the transmission and while there are two gears that seem to be a little chewed up it still doesn't look like it would be enough to prevent the tractor from moving. Also when I rolled the tractor forward the chewed gears engaged and spun.

Another strange thing is that before I tore it down I started it up and engaged the pto shaft. The pto shaft spun, but when I grabbed hold of the pto shaft it stopped spinning and made a grinding noise in what sounded like the tranny. Is it possible for the clutch to have enough material to lightly spin the shaft but when met with resistance (i.e. my hand) would it cause the clutch to slip? Looking through the inspection plate there appears to be some material on the clutch disc but I am not sure how to tell if it needs to be changed or not.

Yes you could have blown the clutch disk and that would also be causing your issues. ;)

Looking through the inspection hole on the bell housing, the clutch disc looks in tact but only looks to be at most 1/4 thick from back to front. If the disc were blown would it still be intact? Also would you have any idea as to the thickness of a new disc so I have something to compare it to? Thanks for the help.

The disc should be around 1/4 of an inch, does the disk spin when the tractor is running?
And look at the output shaft from the clutch and the joint where it enters the transmission there is a joint there that can fail. ;)
