I started up the tractor this morning to let it warm up then stepped outside and closed then door and this is what happened, scared the crap out of me, I thought the roof was caving in until I seen the windshield.

I had the windshield on my old chevy truck crack one time. Must have been a stone chip in it was really cold and had the defrost all the way up. You may have had a stone chip in the window,,, but then how would you get a stone chip in a tractor window. Or maybe the window was set in the molding wrong and was pinched,, I dont know but it sure do look expensive

Ouch!

You have some people throwing baseballs around up there?:D:)

I notice that some of the glass is on the hood, did pressure somehow force the glass out? Or did the heat somehow change the glass so quickly it just popped?

Unless there is a object found, and I bet not - I would be calling Kubota or something, seems to be a defect in the glass when it was made!;)

I'm just waiting for a call back from the dealer, he said he would try to work something out for me. They have treated me real good in the past but then again I did buy 3 tractors from them. There were no chips in the window but the doors have a real good seal so I'm thinking the pressure of closing the door may have done it. I'm just chalking it up to more Donnie luck.

No it blew out as soon as I closed the door and I had just started the tractor to let it warm up so I could pull it around to the shop to tighten up a loose fan belt.

Ugh that really sucks! Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but I wonder if this crazy freezing/melting/freezing weather has anything to do with it.

Yep, thought of that myself other than that it is not easy to close the doors without giving it a pretty good push. From now on I'll be cracking the back side window before I close it to reduce the pressure.

Possible the glass was not tempered right. We had a new slider do that once in the fall when the sun hit it. The factory rep said that it had to do with the temper in the glass. They replace the whole door and installed it for free

I think that was caused by all those picture you posted of keeping out of the weather!:D

I was carrying a shower door up a stairway when I bumped something. An explosion occurred and the lady downstairs came out think a gun went off. I swept that thing up and there was not one piece large then a small finger nail.

My neighbor broke the side door glass on his M9540. I think it cost him about $550 and we put it in.

Ouch.......Your post a week or so ago about the way to start a morning and the beautiful picture, now this polar opposite.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Keeping rear window cracked does sound like a good idea to prevent future problems if root cause cannot be determined.

I agree, something wrong with the temper.
Only time I've seen anything like this a neighbor had ice on his car windshield (temp about -15F) and he threw a bucket of hot water on it.

Well first we stopped in to the insurance company, 250 deductible, then to my Kubota dealer who was great, said he would help me out to lessen the 250 deductible pain. Then off to my glass guy who had a look at the pictures and told me it was stress that made it blow out, said he sees it a lot in vehicles that glass wasn't installed right. Overall it's a bad start to the day that worked out alright, just have to clean up the mess before they come to get it. Thanks for all the reply's guys

With no knowledge of my own, I agree with your glass guy. A tight cab would not explain it to me. We have had several tractors through the years that were so air-tight, you had/have to slam the doors to get them to latch. Never lost a window due to that issue.

Can your glass guy replace the tempered glass with safety glass (like a automotive windshield)? Tempered glass is extremely tough. Hit a tempered glass window with a hammer and the hammer will most likely fly back at you. However just prick tempered glass and it will explode in a million pieces. Those of us in the Fire/Rescue service carry a spring-loaded prick punch so we can break tempered glass when necessary.

Those two words should be "safety glass". You just got you fingers typing too fast!

To be honest I don't know, the Kubota dealer didn't mention it nor did the glass place. Probably too late now but I will be asking, thanks for the idea.

Well Kubota picked up my tractor yesterday and delivered it to the glass place to have it fixed this morning which it was. It will have to stay over night which I expected. While I was talking to Mike the owner of the glass company I asked him if there was another option for a glass replacement and he told me no which was a shame because a couple of his workers told him that a lot of the work they do for Kubota is for the exact same thing. It would seem as though Kubota does not want this getting out because I asked the service manager and the owner if they had ever seen this before and both said no. As for changing my routine with the tractor Mike said it would make no difference, that it was nothing that I did to cause the windshield to break.

That's not the first Kubota glass I have seen randomly explode. Another reason why I think I'll keep my open station and heated snow mobile helmet for snow blowing.

The cost of repairing that scares me.

The way thieves used to break into cars was by throwing a piece of spark plug ceramic at the tempered side windows.

The only reason laminated glass is used in the windshield of cars and trucks is to keep those with no seat belt on inside the car. The other windows are tempered. The tempered glass is much stronger so a branch or similar wont damage it.

Closing the cab door is not going to do it. I have hit some tempered glass with a 12 lb sedge hammer and it bounced off.

There are glass breaking and seat belt cutting tools for those who want to rescue someone after an accident.

The glass breaking tool's important detail is a very hard, very pointed tip.

Make certain nothing like your roof work lights mounting bolt can touch the edge of the glass. Something has created a pressure point.

Perhaps something in the cab structure has allowed the windshield area to rack and thus press against the edge of the glass. An improper install can do this but this is very rare.
