I have a GR2120 that is about 10 years old and I'm having trouble starting it. A couple of weeks ago I took it out of winter hibernation because I needed to mow, I had to charge the battery but other than that it fired right up. After I shut it off I noticed a buzzing sound that I tracked down to a relay, which I believe is the starter relay. I started and stopped the tractor a few times and it kept buzzing. The only way to stop the buzzing was to unhook the battery. So I bought a new relay, when I went to change it the engine wouldn't turn over so I changed it and it still wouldn't turn over. The starter is good and I can run the mower if I bridge the starter with a screwdriver. I convinced myself it was the ignition switch so I changed that but no dice. All fuses check good, 40 amp fuse is good, battery is good. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Look at your PTO safety switch. Wiggle the lever while holding the key. Of all of the GR problems I dealt with over the years, the pto safety switch was one of the more common ones.

also check your grounds, and I mean with a digital volt meter, by doing a voltage drop test. Huh you say? Yes. Take your DVOM, put one probe on the battery negative terminal. Other probe on the engine block, and have someone crank the engine. If your DVOM shows more than 0.5v (or 500mV, same thing) you have a ground problem. If under 0.5v, you're good. THEN, move your probe from the engine to the chassis somewhere and do the same thing. Under 0.5v is what you want to see, the closer to zero the better. If over, clean the ground connections both at the battery, the cable to the frame, and the little jumper from the engine to the frame. A bad ground will absolutely cause the starter relay to buzz like that. It will also take out the module, aka "combination box".

Thanks for the help, I did find a broken ground wire, what is the "combination box", is it one of the relays?

The combination box is like the brain of your machine.

The following is not specific to your machine but gives you an idea of what the b ox is about.
